The Background
Designed as a replacement for MGs MGA , the MGB first appeared in 1962 as a 2 seater soft top sports car.
Then in 1965 a coupe version the MGB GT hit the roads, with both models utilising the 4 cylinder 1798cc B-series engine , manual gearbox driving the rear wheels.
Production continued right up to 1980 with over 523,800 vehicles manufactured during its production run.
The History
Purchased by the owner in November 2004 from a local acquaintance, little is known of its history prior to this.
It does however appear to have been Waxoyed from new and well maintained by previous owners. Restoration work had been started by the previous owner, but due to illness, not completed.
With the MG back in his garage, the restoration work was completed, the car put back on the road and then regularly used for the next 2 years.
With work commitments in Australia beckoning, the MG was again taken off the road and put into storage for longer than anticipated, before being re-commissioned upon his return in 2019.
Now living in London, the current owner has decided, although not having had a chance to use the MG again, that it’s not currently practical to run a classic car so he has reluctantly decided to pass on to someone who will hopefully use it as intended.
The Paperwork
There is a current V5c in the owner’s name ( well his father's name ) & numerous receipts for work undertaken including parts over the years.
The Interior
The interior is typically late sixties / early 70s with seats finished in black vinyl with a narrow complementing green trim, black carpets and black dash facia.
All are in a good usable condition, with no scrapes or tears visible. Inertia reel seatbelts were fitted as part of the refurbishment programme & seats were re-upholstered. Door cards too look good as too does the boot carpet to the rear.
A very practical & tidy interior which will stand up to many more years of use as it is, with perhaps just a little detailing to tidy up.
The Exterior
This MG had a full respray just prior to purchase in 2004 and generally appears to be in good condition. Closer inspection does show the odd stone chip, scratch etc, to be expected from a car that that’s been tucked away for the last 15 years or so.
The spoked wheels appear good to go, chrome work is nice & shiny. Doors shut with a reassuring clunk as do the boot & bonnet.
Overall, as the photos show, it’s a good-looking car with its chrome bumpers, wire wheels & racing green paintwork.
The Mechanics
This MG started easily from cold and once warmed up, ticked over quietly for the photoshoot.
The owner’s father, an experienced engineer, very kindly rebuilt the engine with invoices available showing £2,173 for parts and machining works undertaken in 2011.
Professional re-commissioning works undertaken in 2019 anticipating regular use included a new steering rack, new front brake calipers, new rear brake cylinders, a new clutch slave cylinder and a new fuel tank & sender unit. Bills for these works are on file.
Having been driven very little miles since both the engine rebuild & recent re-commissioning works, we would suggest a little running in may be needed by a new owner.
The Appeal
Sporting motoring in a great handling, quick, reliable & affordable package, little has changed since the MGB was first conceived.
This gem of an MGB GT will no doubt give many miles of carefree driving for an enthusiastic owner.
It looks great, chrome bumpers, good paintwork, re-upholstered interior & good to go too with a rebuilt engine. Improvements could be made but we think we’d just get in and drive it for a while, life’s too short.
Ready for this summer's drives out to the hills, down to the coast or along to your local car show, could this be the one you’ve been promising yourself through lockdown?
