Highlights
- Has spent much of its life in Portugal, where the first owner had a holiday home
- Low mileage and apparently unrestored
- Fuel fuel injected, with the metering unit replaced in 2019
The Appeal
With bodywork designed by Karmann of Germany, the Triumph TR6 was amongst the first British petrol engined cars to make use of fuel injection. Otherwise, it was based quite heavily upon its successful TR predecessors, sharing their separate chassis and numerous mechanical components.
This 1969 example has been used quite sparingly since new and the indicated 46,008 miles displayed on the odometer are believed to be genuine. The Triumph’s original owner apparently drove it to Portugal where it was used during holidays for a number of years at the owner’s holiday home. Since returning to the UK in 1999, it has always been stored carefully in a garage when not in use. As the vendor now uses the car very infrequently, it is now in need of a new home.
The History and Paperwork
- Driven to Portugal when new and used at the owner’s holiday home
- Returned to the UK in 1999
- 5 owners from new
- Low mileage confirmed by previous MOT certificates
- Acquired by the vendor in March 2018
- Believed to be unrestored
- V5C and large paperwork file present
- MOT valid until August 2023
The Interior
- Mazda MX5 seats (originals included in sale)
- Very good original condition
- Some wear to certain components
In an attempt to introduce some modern comfort into the TR6, the car is currently equipped with seats from a Mazda MX5, which have reportedly been reupholstered in cream leather. The original black vinyl items are also included with the car and look to be in very good condition. This gives the next owner the flexibility to fit the seats of their choice.
Similarly, the car is now fitted with a Mota Lita steering wheel although the original is still present. There is also a wind deflector that can be fitted behind the seats. The carpeting presents well overall although there is a small hole worn in the section covering the passenger footwell and a few areas where some wear is evident.
The dashboard looks to be unaffected by UV damage, the vinyl top section still looking smart and the veneer fascia is in very good condition for its age. The vendor informs us that everything held within, including the original instruments and the period radio, functions exactly as they should.
The Exterior
- Navy blue paint
- Spent much of its life in a dry climate
- Very tidy underneath
Finished in a rather fetching shade of navy blue, this Triumph is very well presented and the vendor states that it is very original. Having lived in the dry climate of Portugal for much of its life, corrosion has not taken hold and a glance underneath reveals everything to be very clean and free from significant corrosion.
We are informed that the car was undersealed from new and to this day the majority of the underseal remains intact on the chassis.
The paintwork is very smart with few blemishes and the bodywork appears straight and free from signs of previous damage or corrosion. The vendor points out a small scratch on the boot lid but there is little more to report. The glass is all in good order and the same goes for the light lenses. The brightwork also looks smart and is very serviceable.
It now sits upon wire wheels with knock-off spinners - the “Old Timer” tool for removing them is also supplied. The vendor informs us that the tyres have plenty of tread remaining and are in good shape.
The PVC convertible hood operates smoothly and the fabric remains taught and bright. We particularly like the period number plates which really finish the car nicely.
The Mechanics
- Lucas mechanical fuel injection
- 2.5-litre straight-six
- Fuel metering unit replaced in October 2019
- Spark plugs replaced and engine tuned in August 2022
The vendor informs us that this TR6 drives exceedingly well and performs well in all gears. The 2.5-litre engine runs strongly on all 6 cylinders and benefits from some recent servicing and tuning.
The fuel metering unit for the injection system was replaced in 2019 and the spark plugs were replaced during a recent engine tune.
Summary
With so few miles on the odometer and presented in lovely overall condition, this is a really fine example of the revered Triumph TR6. Retaining its mechanical fuel injection system, this TR6 is a fine original specimen that we’re sure the next owner shall enjoy.
