THE APPEAL
Announced in 1948, the Sunbeam Talbot was a car heavily influenced by the American styling themes of the time.
Its curvy front, pointed bonnet, sweeping curves and art deco profile were very much features seen in the more luxurious cars of the day, while the model was also well-regarded for its lively performance. Indeed, it was very much the precursor to the compact executive cars of today – no bigger than a Morris Oxford MO, but far more upmarket and better to drive.
It could be ordered as a four-door saloon or drophead coupe, and there were two models: the 80 and the 90, the latter of which was one of the sportiest cars of its day, especially after 1950 and the launch of the MK II, when it acquired a larger 2,267cc engine, making it capable of speeds in excess of 80mph.
This is one such car – a 1952 90 saloon, last on the road in 2010 and left standing since. It’s a genuine barn find in need of full restoration, and we advise you pay close attention to the photos to determine its overall condition. When restored, you’ll have one of the finest and most elegant saloons of the 1950s.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- UK V5
- Off the road since 2010
- Five previous owners
- Will be tax and MOT exempt
THE INTERIOR
- Complete and intact
- Seats are heavily patinated but are largely sound
- Tear to driver’s seat upper corner
- Will require deep clean and recommissioning, but all dials and gauges are present
- Door cards in salvageable order
- Discoloured and dropping headlining
- Sliding sunroof
- It appears that the interior will respond well to a deep clean but that some parts – notable carpets and trim, may well require replacement
THE EXTERIOR
- Bodywork and trim all complete
- Appears structurally stable but with some advanced rust in places
- Evident corrosion to door bottoms, wings and rear arches
- Separate chassis, appears largely solid but a full inspection is advised
- All original trim and badges present and correct, most of which appears ripe for recommissioning
- Flashing indicators fitted aftermarket
THE MECHANICS
- 2,267cc side-valve four
- Column-change manual transmission
- Vehicle hasn’t been driven for many years and will require mechanical work
- Will require recovery via trailer or low-loader
- Engine turns and is not seized
SUMMARY
Stored for many years, this Sunbeam is now in a condition where it will require extensive restoration work before it can once again be used and enjoyed – but it’s not beyond salvation. Far from it, in fact, as despite the obviously distressed bodywork condition, it appears to be in quite sound structural condition and all of the chrome and trim are present, as is most of the interior. It’s not an overnight project, but nor is it a huge one as the basis with which you’ll begin is fundamentally complete and sound. It has enormous potential.
