The Interior
- Mushroom hide
- Very good condition indeed
- Everything works
By far the smartest area of this lovely W124 is the interior, which is in amazing condition. Despite the pale colour of the upholstery, it has survived exceptionally well with little even in the way of wear we could see. The vendor informs us that everything works exactly as it should, including the electric seatbelt assistance.
The Mushroom hide seats are really lovely and are free from any damage so far as we can see. The rear seats in particular appear as if they have seldom been sat upon. Besides a light sheen from use, there is also little wear to be seen on common points of contact such as the steering wheel and gear lever.
The light-coloured carpets too, have survived remarkably well and we understand that the headlining is in good order. We were unable to see any signs of UV damage to the dashboard and the Zebrano inlays still present extremely well, with only the smallest of scratches visible on the centre console. Even the door cards are in great shape and the frameless windows operate exactly as they should.
Except for a couple of faint stains, the boot carpet is also very good and we could see the original toolkit was still present.
The interior of this W124 is amongst the smartest we have seen from a car of this age, which we feel is a strong indication of a Mercedes that has been doted upon since new.
The Exterior
- Very straight bodywork
- Impala Brown paint
- A few areas would benefit from rectification
Out in the sun, the W124 looks really fine and we think the Impala Brown paint scheme perfectly complements the Mushroom interior.
Overall, this is a very straight and original example and the paintwork has survived really well indeed. As is not uncommon on W124s, there are a couple of localised areas that would require a little attention if this is to become one of the best original 300 CEs on the road. Both rear wheel arches have some corrosion starting to appear, although we think a little remedial work should be able to sort these before they become more serious. Likewise, there is some surface rust under the front inside edge of the bonnet and a stone chip on the driver’s side door pillar.
Otherwise, this looks to be a really solid and damage-free example. A glance underneath reveals that the floor pans look really good and the panel fit is exactly as it should be. The steel sliding sunroof operates correctly and the trims that run around the waistline are straight and in good order.
The Mechanics
- 3-litre straight-six
- New shock absorbers
- Rebuilt differential
The vendor informs us that on 11th August 2022, the rear differential was stripped down and rebuilt along with the centre bearing to the prop shaft. The invoice for this work, totalling £845.87, is included in the Mercedes’ history file.
Following this recent work, the car drives exceedingly well with ample performance from the 3-litre straight-six petrol engine. We understand that the automatic gearbox operates exactly as it should, making this car a fantastic machine for wafting along.
It also received new shock absorbers in 2017, which means his W124’s cosseting ride is retained to this day. The vendor informs us that the brakes work well bringing the Mercedes to a halt quickly and in a straight line.
Summary
Here we have an excellent opportunity to acquire a lovely example of a W124 300 CE. It’s a remarkable survivor which, with a little work, could make it one of the best original examples in existence.
For anyone who fancies a modern classic, a reliable daily driver or simply an example of Mercedes-Benz’s beautiful engineering, this W124 is definitely one to consider.
