The Parts
If you’re building, restoring or just want to own a key piece of a racy, lightweight Ferrari, look no further. That’s exactly what we have here in the form of a set of three featherweight Weber carburetors from a 250 GT.
Bologna based Weber was the company that supplied Ferrari with state-of-the-art carburettors for its competition and road cars from the early days – long before they featured under the bonnet of other marques. Ferrari needed the best, and Weber was keen to deliver. Even when tasked with creating something lightweight. After all, lightness is the way to speed.
What Weber delivered were these twin-choke downdraught 36 DCL3 carburettors. These lightweight carbs were fitted to many highly desirable early Ferrari 250 engines including those in the 250 GT Pininfarina Coupe, 250 GTE and 250 GT Berlinetta Tour de France models. They have… credentials, put it that way!
To be presented with the opportunity to acquire one of these is rare, but three is unheard of. However, a Car & Classic user looking to release some of their extensive and hard-earned collection has exactly that. Of the three on offer here, two have their original badges numbered 1240 and 1515. The other is missing its badge, but as you can see, it matches the others perfectly.
In weight terms the carb badged as 1515 and the carb without a badge weigh in at approximately 1.2kg. The one numbered 1240 weighs 1.5kg. To give you a frame of reference, ‘standard’ carbs such as a 40 DCZ6 tip the scales at somewhere closer to 3kg per unit.
These carbs were previously fitted on a very tired 250 GT engine as a set and were removed in 2010. As such, they will need to be recommissioned before they’re once again returned to their petrol-flinging duties. Crucially though, the key components of a rare set of Ferrari carburetors remain, and once refurbished, they would give whatever they’re fitted to that authentic touch.
