RESERVE LOWERED - BSA Wedge Tank Model 1928

Highlights

• An immaculately presented 250cc single cylinder motorcycle
• Subject of a full nut and bolt professional refurbishment between 2009 and 2011
• Only a few hundred miles have been completed post-restoration

The Background

BSA added motorcycles to their bicycle range in 1910 with the introduction of the 3 ½ HP. This 1928 BSA is the last of the wedge tank models with the saddle tank versions appearing shortly afterwards. The B28 featured a number of innovations, including a 3-speed gearbox, acetylene lighting system and drum brakes front and rear.

The History

This motorcycle was a pile of original parts in 1997 as can be seen in our photograph package. Some years later the motorcycle underwent a full restoration which culminated in its run out in 2010’s Banbury Run, a well-known event for vintage motorcycles.
The owner prior to the current owner only ever displayed the motorcycle inside his house, so when the current owner acquired the motorcycle earlier this year, he was determined that it would be run and used. The motorcycle has been used most weekend for some gentle but enjoyable runs around the Northamptonshire countryside.
The current owner is a vintage motorcycle enthusiast and, as such, knows what he is looking at. What appealed to him about this motorcycle was the immaculate condition, the originality and some of the sought after attributes of this historic motorcycle.
These include the automatic oil feed system, the original number plate, the complete acetylene lighting system and the matching and original frame and engine numbers.

The Paperwork

As the picture package shows there is a great level of reassurance-giving paperwork and provenance with this motorcycle including a photographic record of the pre, during and post restoration program. There is also paperwork supporting the reallocation of the motorcycle’s original registration number from DVLA. There is also a useful copy of an original BSA owner’s manual containing a plethora of useful information.
The motorbike is registered as a historic vehicle and, as such, is tax and MOT exempt.

The Exterior

As the photographs attest there is really nothing negative that can be said about the presentation of this historic motorcycle. The paintwork, bars, grips, pegs and that iconic flat-sided tank are all immaculate. The wheels are in mint condition and the tyres have only a handful of miles behind them. The crowning glory, of course, is the highly polished headlight which is as bright and pristine in the metal as the photographs suggest.

The Mechanics

The single cylinder 250cc engine seems quite rudimentary by today’s standards. With that simplicity comes great reliability and durability. The motorcycle starts, drives and stops as you would expect for such a low mileage and beautifully restored example

The Appeal

For those with an appreciation and knowledge of vintage British motorcycles the appeal of this one will be immediate. The motorcycle offers a rare and heady combination of originality, beautiful presentation, and useability. Being a 250cc motorcycle makes it relatively light, lithe, and manageable. The current owner has found it to be a reliable head turner and is deeply appreciative of the raft of original features of the BSA.
The motorcycle is ready to ride away and will be an appreciating and admired asset well into the future.
