The Background
The Chesil Speedster is now handcrafted by skilled artisans at Westfield Sports Cars, near Dudley, West Midlands, after Westfield bought out Chesil Motor Company in 2019. There are over 500 Chesil Speedsters in existence.
The Chesil Speedster is a replica of the famous Porsche 356 sports car (1948-1965) and closely resembles that car’s 1957 model year with its distinctive lines never failing to impress even non-car enthusiasts. It is not surprising to learn that the Porsche 356 and Chesil Speedster both share the same origins. When the original manufacturer built his first sports car, he took parts from the VW production line. To this day, Chesil does the same.
As well as looking, sounding and driving the same as the original car would have, the Chesil Speedster incorporates several improvements which make ownership an even more attractive proposition. Upgrades in safety and performance can be found in the engine, electrical and braking systems, whilst a carefully considered improvement in interior comfort and accessory level creates a more practical car, without compromising its classic status.
The History
It is worth noting that this is a factory built example, NOT one of the hand assembled 'home kits' and was done in 2016. EWV 384L has led a quiet life. During its first five years, the car has been driven just 1,224 miles by its two previous owners. The present owner acquired the car in July 2020 and has nursed it lovingly since.
The Paperwork
Being only five years old, the Chesil Speedster comes with a comprehensive file of authentic paperwork, including its V5, MOT certificate to 12th May, 2022, an original Bill of Sale dated 17th August, 2016, the DVLA Built Up Inspection Report and a number of service and purchase bills.
The Interior
The interior is in excellent condition and the ‘Vanilla’ leather seats and door cards present an air of outdoor 1950’s Californian lifestyle and glamour.
The original owner specified the pair of high-backed bucket seats and rear bench seat, along with a set of white-faced instruments, dash-mounted clock, Moto-Lita split-riveted wooden steering wheel and retro push-button radio.
The Exterior
The Speedster is resplendent in its ‘Sasso Blue’ finish and contrasting dark blue ‘Twillfast’ hood. Aside from a small mark on the right of the rear bumper (the knock of which appears to have slightly dislodged the chrome trim insert), the exterior paintwork is in excellent order, as is the remainder of its chrome brightwork.
There are a few inauthentic badges (Porsche & Reutter) around the exterior which the new owner may choose to retain or remove. If this was a genuine Porsche 356 Speedster, you would be bidding upwards of £260,000.
The Mechanics
The Chesil Speedster is fitted with the mid-range 1800cc flat-four, twin-carb Volkswagen Beetle petrol engine and five-speed gearbox. (Chesil also offers 1,600cc and 2,000cc engines.). The exhaust is a durable stainless steel unit.
The car has a valid MOT to May, 2022 and looked (and sounded) to be in perfect working order when repositioning it for the photography.
The Appeal
Who doesn’t love a convertible – especially one as stunningly beautiful as the Chesil Speedster? True roofless aficionados know there are many reasons for having one on your driveway but, bragging rights aside, most are sensory. Exposed as you are to nature’s elements, there is a heightened sense of motion, the rush of passing scenery, the fragrance of fresh, open air as dappled shade flickers over your Ray-Bans. Bliss!
Couple that with this beautiful, classic retro-styled sports car and you begin to fully appreciate the appeal. Overall, there is little reason to doubt that EWV 384L will continue to attract ‘Oohs!’ and ‘Ahhs’ wherever it goes and serves its new owner well for years to come. And don’t forget those bragging rights…
