The Appeal
The American motorcycle industry is known more than anything else for torquey, lazy cruiser bikes, large-engined machines which will transport you from sea to shining sea in the utmost comfort and style. Harley-Davidson has defined the breed for most of its existence, modern-day cruisers being the spiritual descendants of the earliest V-twin Harleys from the 1930s.
Tastes shifted towards smaller bikes in the 1960s, but by the 1980s a sense of nostalgia for the great road kings of the past began to sweep across the motorcycle industry and the cruiser was born. It gave Harley-Davidson an opportunity to return to the forefront of the American market, after it had been overshadowed by Japanese manufacturers for several years. It turned out to be a wise move, and Harley-Davidson now offers a large range of cruisers, all of which are very much in demand.
Of them all, the Street Glide has a particularly distinctive character, being a long-distance touring ‘bagger’ with all the trimmings but specially designed to have the style and attitude of a mean street custom. With a top speed in the region of 80mph, two enormous panniers for luggage and a batwing fairing providing protection from the elements, it’s perfectly equipped for a riding holiday, while the low seating position and menacing blacked-out trim will ensure its never short of admirers when you turn up at your preferred biker cafe.
While Street Glides are eye-catching machines even in standard trim, this example is that much more so, having been customized by the vendor to a fully bespoke appearance. Finished in jet black with numerous special custom parts and beautiful gold-leaf lettering, it’s a real work of art and one which would be very well-received at any custom motorcycle show.
The History and Paperwork
- Imported from America and first registered with the DVLA in 2018
- Owned since 2018 by an enthusiastic Harley-Davidson customizer and collector
- Fully customized at Warr’s Harley-Davidson to the vendor’s requirements
- Sold with the V5 and registration documents from the DVLA
The Condition
- Many custom components including wheels, mudguard and handlebars
- Fitted with enlarged pannier boxes
- 13-carat gold lettering
- Immaculate paintwork
On paper, this might be a 15-year-old bike, but having been extensively customized and reworked within the past five years, and only ridden very sparingly during that time, it appears today as if it was brand-new. Painted in a mesmerizingly deep jet black, set off with matt black engine and forks, it rather lives up to its name, Sinister, which is emblazoned across the batwing fairing in beautiful 13-carat gold-leaf lettering.
All the custom work was completed by Warr’s Harley Davidson to the owner’s bespoke specification, and a list of all the special touches would be very long indeed but, to be brief, the front mudguard, headlamp, wheels, seat, handlebars, rear parcel rack and exhaust tips are all custom-fitted. So, too, are the pannier boxes, which are of a larger capacity than the original ones.
Apart from a minor surface mark on one of the exhaust tips, we have looked all over this bike and cannot see anything to fault in the paintwork. It must rank as one of the best custom Street Glides in the country, and has the potential to be an award-winner at some of the major custom bike shows.
The Mechanics
- Fresh MoT with no advisories
- Starts on the button and runs superbly
- Only 1300 miles covered since November 2019
Since this Harley has been on British roads, it has been MoTed every year, excepting 2022, and on each occasion has passed without a single advisory. Couple that with the fact that it fires up first time and settles into a strong and steady idle, and we behold a bike in the very best mechanical health. Even though it has only been used sparingly, the vendor has kept on top of maintenance, with a new drive-belt and pulley having been fitted in the recent past.
It’s more than just a good, useable bike, too. It’s a profoundly soulful one, which should delight all lovers of the American V-twin. The engine’s bass burble is music to any enthusiast’s ears, and provides a stirring soundtrack for rides down to the coast and cruising along the promenade. If you fancy hearing something different, though, this is a high-tech bike with a loaded specification including a radio with dual speakers, which we understand can be clearly heard over the engine noise.
Bidders will note that the Street Glide is compliant with London’s ULEZ criteria, so there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be enjoyed in the city as well as in the country.
The Summary
There’s no cruiser like a Harley-Davidson cruiser, and there’s certainly nothing quite like this one-off custom build. Not only is it equipped with all the appointments you could possibly want for long and leisurely riding tours, it has also been beautifully restyled with numerous custom accessories, making for an eye-catching machine which stands apart from the crowd.
Since it’s in excellent mechanical health, too, you’d be wise to clear a space in your garage for it and enjoy the rest of the summer. The open road beckons…
