THE APPEAL
The fifth generation of VW’s evergreen Golf came along at the end of 2004 and marked a major step forward for the model, bringing in an entirely new platform and far sharper handling and steering than its predecessor.
That was the perfect basis for a reinvigorated GTi, a model that had lost some its cachet with the anodyne MK 4. The Mk5 was a serious return to form, with immense performance and great handling.
This one is even better. Number 904 of 1,500 30th Anniversary models built between 2006 and 2007, it has had some pretty serious performance upgrades despite still looking pretty much standard. With a documented 360bhp, it’s a real weapon, but still looks largely standard.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Bills and invoices back to 2009
- No expense spared on maintenance
- MOT until February 2023
- Rolling road power printout
The Golf has a nearly a complete history of all work that’s been done to it. Most of the work has been done by VW dealers, but there are a few independent garage receipts. It’s had the timing chain and water pump replaced recently with documentation to prove. It’s been serviced regularly and has only been run on high-octane fuel.
It has a UK V5C and an MOT until 2023.
THE INTERIOR
- Driver’s seat bolster refurbished
- All original and well presented
- Golf ball gearknob
- Heated seats
The interior is in excellent condition overall and the vendor has the driver’s seat bolster repaired as it had a small scrape.
All the seats are clean and good condition with minor wear and the carpets are the originals.
It also has an XTRONS android head unit fitted, allowing smartphone integration with all the latest apps including Google Maps and Spotify.
The car retains its correct build plaque, door sill trims and dash badge, and the original jack and spare wheel is present.
THE EXTERIOR
- Original paint
- No known corrosion
- Excellent alloys
- Some minor flaws
The Golf is in good overall condition with no signs of corrosion or any panel damage, with the front wings (a common corrosion point) having been replaced in 2021.
As can be expected from an otherwise original car, there are a few ag- related marks all over, notably a few stone chips to the front of the bonnet and bumper. It has carbon mirror caps with LED side repeaters, but the originals are available should you wish to use them.
The alloy wheels were refurbished in June 2021 in light grey and remain immaculate, while the tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport 4s with plenty of tread. The front grilles were recently sprayed in satin black to freshen them up.
THE MECHANICS
- 2.0 turbo
- Six-speed manual
- Stage 2+ tuned by R-Tech
- Timing chain and tensioners recently replaced
Under the bonnet, you’ll find VW’s BYD TFSI 2.0-litre engine which was Stage 2+ tuned by R-Tech November 2020, with a recorded 360bhp and 400ft/lbs. It comes with R-techs custom DSC tune and over-run crackles with hard limiter (flames can be spat!) It has a Milltek performance exhaust system.
Modifications include VIS HPFP internals, and FMIC welly cooler, a 3" Decat down pipe, a Ramair cold air intake system, GFB diverter valve and an Audi RS4 Fuel valve.
It has always used 5w40 oil and 99 Ron octane fuel during the owner’s tenure and has an RTS Twin friction clutch with solid flywheel.
The Timing chain and cam follower were replaced earlier this year by a VW dealership.
In addition, the brakes have been upgraded to Audi TT MK2 V6 - 340mm Brembo disks and pads – with braided hoses. It also has an anti-lift kit fitted to increase caster and reduce axle tramp.
SUMMARY
At 15 years old, this is a car that’s in truly remarkable condition for its age and one that’s a real sleeper – it’s sensationally fast, yet looks absolutely standard, as well as being one of the most collectable modern VW Golf variants. A real performance icon, with devilish performance.
