The Appeal
If you’re perhaps unfamiliar with the legendary ST220, you may indeed be fooled into expecting a run-of-the-mill, family-spec saloon. This, however, is no ordinary Mondeo…
With a whopping 3L V6 hidden under the bonnet, the Mondeo ST220 truly packs a punch, offering a superb balance of handsome styling, excellent value for money, and most important of all; incredible performance. The ST220 is one of those vehicles that manage to be perfectly suited to the practical requirements of day-to-day life, but would also gladly embarrass performance cars on the track.
With this in mind, the ST220 would be perfectly suited to those looking for a grin-inducing daily driver, weekend toy, show car, or even anything in between. It truly is a diverse, capable and impressive vehicle, as further supported by high praise from the likes of Jeremy Clarkson and the old Top Gear crew.
The History and Paperwork
- Just 4 previous keepers
- Dry stored
- Well maintained
- V5C document present
- MOT until February 2023
- Partially stamped service booklet
As the vehicle makes a suitable daily driver, it is not uncommon to find examples of the ST220 with huge mileage figures shown. This particular example, however, has only covered just shy of 60K, having been enjoyed by just 4 former keepers. Over the years, the vehicle certainly appears to have been well cared for, with the mileage figure suggesting weekend/special occasion use for the most part.
Having watched the original Top Gear episodes praising the Mondeo ST220 for its superb performance and value for money, the current keeper ticked off a dream vehicle on their list, acquiring the car in 2021. Throughout their ownership, the car has seldom been used, save for the occasional weekend drive.
Under their care, the car has also received new front bushes, subframe bolts, and a new washer pump. Evidence of such can be found within the included paperwork, which contains invoices for previous maintenance, the service booklet, and the V5C document
As the current keeper feels this superb saloon deserves to be used as intended, this Mondeo ST220 now awaits its next home, where it will no doubt continue to impress.
The Interior
- Heated leather seats
- Multi-function steering wheel
- Denso head unit
- Great condition respective of age
- Hands-free kit
- Factory fitted sunroof
A peek inside the interior reveals everything you’d perhaps come to expect from Ford’s performance variant; supportive leather heated seats, modern comforts, and ST styling throughout.
As the vehicle has of course been used as intended over the years, there are the expected signs of wear and age to note within the cabin. The most obvious wear can be found with the front seats, which do show minor cracking/wear to the leather and minor bolster wear. That being said, they do remain as functional as ever, and would no doubt benefit from a dash of TLC. The rears seats, on the other hand, have clearly seen far less use and look excellent.
Minor wear can also be found with the gearknob as pictured. Keen eyes will also notice that the silver finish trim inserts on the steering wheel also show signs of use, with an amount of the finish having rubbed away over the years. Those familiar with early 2000’s cars may have already experienced this, as easily wearing plastics were seemingly a trend of the time. Fortunately, the availability of modern refinishing and dipping services makes this quite a minor, easily rectifiable issue.
Carpeting throughout the car appears to be rather well preserved and is said to show no noticeable defects. Headlining and door card details seemingly follow suit, although the door card fabric and trim pieces may require a good detail.
All electrics, controls, and instruments within the cabin are indeed believed to be in full working order, with the exception of an intermittent passenger’s mirror light, and the 6-disc changer. The disc changer has not been looked into further, but could very well prove to be a simple fix for a proficient electrician/ enthusiast.
The Exterior
- Original finish
- ST Styling
- 18” alloy wheels
- Great condition
- Factory fitted sunroof
Part of what makes the ST220 so appealing is its unassuming exterior styling. Save for the originally diamond cut 18” alloys, and subtle ST styling throughout, the design is rather modest, further adding to the somewhat “sleeper” presence of the car.
Overall, the car has seemingly been well preserved over the years and still shows off plenty of shine to the Performance Blue paintwork. That being said, there are minor defects to note, such as a small area of damage to the passenger side lower corner valance.
The exterior also shows a patch of clear coat damage to the front bumper, scuffs to the left sill that extend to the length of the front door, and a small dent to the rear right door. Due to the vehicle’s age, there are also the expected hairline scratches and stone chips, which could be alleviated with a good machine polish and minor touchups.
Originally supplied with a diamond cut face, the 18” alloys now show off a gun-metal grey finish, with matching centre caps on 3 wheels. The wheels are in great condition for the most part, but do show minor scuffs on spokes, instances of curb rash, and brake dust buildup. However, if you wished to revert the wheels to their original finish, now would be the perfect time for a refurbishment.
Glass, trim pieces, and badging seemingly show off minimal signs of age and look excellent against the Performance Blue paintwork. If seeking a perfect finish, the front ST220 badge may benefit from a dash of TLC, although this is perhaps more a result of the low positioning from the factory.
The Mechanics
- 3L V6
- 6-Speed manual
- Milltek exhaust system
- MOT until Feb 2023
- Well maintained example
- Drives very well
Standing head and shoulders above its base model siblings, this Mondeo packs a 3L V6 and a well-paired 6-speed manual gearbox. Although not the most powerful V6 on the market, there is more than enough power to enjoy spirited acceleration and balanced handling.
Buyers will be pleased to know that this particular example fires up without fault, and drives very well. This ST220 also benefits from a Milltek exhaust, which offers just the right amount of tasteful burbles along the rev range, and a subtle growl on idle.
Wishing to be as honest as possible with this vehicle, the current owner has made us aware of one known issue with the vehicle. When the vehicle is cold, is it reported that the revs temporarily drop upon gear changes, but then quickly pick up a moment later and deliver power as required. This is rumoured to be quite a common issue, and could perhaps be a simple enough fix for a mechanically minded enthusiast.
Otherwise, the vehicle performs like a champion, no doubt making Clarkson and the boys proud many years later. If you’re looking for a fun daily driver or weekend toy, few carsoffer the same balance as a V6 Mondeo.
Summary
This Mondeo ST220 presents a fantastic opportunity to own a vehicle many enthusiasts fondly recall growing up. It’s one of the few performance saloons to receive high praise from the likes of Top Gear, and it’s certainly easy to see why. This ST220 offers a superb balance of performance and practicality, making it the perfect candidate for a fun daily driver, weekend B road toy or even a future show car build.
This particular example is in great condition both inside and out, having covered a mere 59K miles across just 4 former owners. If you’re looking for a tidy low mileage ST220, examples like this seldom pop up in the market.
