Highlights
- Desirable 3.0-litre I6 engine
- Recent water pump replacement
- Great colour combination
The Appeal
Two-seat coupés are few and far between in the modern era of SUVs, family wagons and hatchbacks, making them somewhat of a lost art within the automotive world.
The BMW Z4 coupé surely deserves a place in the coupé hall of fame, with its timeless, classy design, range of engines on offer and - of course - the excellent build quality that BMW is known for.
Perhaps best of the non-M models is the 3.0-litre, straight-six, N52 - equipped version, with this particular example also being an ‘SI’ which boosts power output to 261bhp, sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.
If you’re looking for a desirable ‘SI’ coupe that offers potential for aesthetic improvement, then this is the one for you. Buy it, drive it, enjoy it and improve it as-and-when you see fit.
History & Paperwork
- V5 registered keepers document, showing 6 former keepers
- Purchased by the current owner in October 2013 with 67,000 miles on the odometer
- The car has not been modified whilst in the care of the current owner, but was previously fitted with black mirror caps, black alloy wheels and a wrapped black roof
- Partially-stamped service history - the car was regularly serviced by REME engineers whilst the vendor was in active service
- Current MoT valid until 08.03.24
- Full complement of BMW handbooks and manuals
- Miscellaneous invoices for items such as tyres, coil springs, brake calliper replacement, etc
The Interior
- Cream leather interior in decent overall condition
- Commensurate wear visible to both seats, particularly on the outer edge of the driver’s seat
- Gearstick would benefit from replacement due to significant wear
- Pop-up infotainment unit in full working order
- Luggage/load cover present and working correctly
- No reported faults with any of the interior systems, switches or displays
The Exterior
- Blue bodywork in generally average condition for a car of this age and mileage, with minimal signs of any damage or heavy wear
- The paintwork would benefit from a thorough cut-and-polish to bring back its lustre after being kept outside throughout the vendor’s ownership tenure, whilst there is also a deep scratch visible on the NSR wing, along with a number of other more visible imperfections which have been documented in the gallery below
- The wheels are in need of refurbishment and polishing, with the black paintwork and lacquer peeling in numerous places
The Mechanicals
- 3.0-litre N52 straight-six engine with 251bhp
- A new battery has been fitted recently, and the car fires into life with ease and idles well
- The engine bay itself would benefit from a significant detailing, but we could see no sign of any obvious issues save for the odd fluid stain here-and-there, as expected for a vehicle of this age
- Following the most recent MoT, the NSF coil spring and shock absorber were replaced, but the advisories for corroded OS brake pipes require addressing
- The most recent stamped service took place in November 2019 at 93,288 miles, which was a major service including spark plug change
- The water pump was replaced in 2022, though there is no invoice for this
- Underneath, the chassis looks to be in decent condition, with no noted issues at the most recent MoT exam save for the aforementioned OS brake pipes
- The seller is not aware of any mechanical faults with the vehicle
Summary
A design classic in the making, the timeless styling of the E86 Z4 Coupe has aged fantastically, and still draws plenty of attention to this day, both in M and non-M guise.
This example has been in the care of the current owner for nearly six years now, and is ready for the next enthusiast to enjoy, drive and fettle to bring it back to its full glory.
