THE BACKGROUND
The Ford Transit really doesn’t need any introduction, it’s been the backbone of the British workforce for decades - and for good reason, it’s tough, spacious, well made and drives exceptionally well. The perfect base for a camper then.
THE HISTORY
This particular vehicle was converted to camper specification in late 2004 by Cosi Conversions in Kenilworth. Since then it has had 3 owners, all UK based, and has spent the last 3 years in the ownership of its current keeper in south Wales.
THE PAPERWORK
The V5 is present and correct, as are a large number of previous MOT certificates, confirming the low mileage. The current MOT certificate runs to June 2022. A few receipts for work carried out, as well as the original handbooks and manuals for the various components of the camper, are also included in the sale.
Most importantly, the vehicle comes with a great service history (The only missing services are 2009, 2015, 2016 and 2020), the last full service having been carried out by a local garage in February of this year, when the mileage was recorded as 80,198.
THE INTERIOR
The cabin of the vehicle is in good condition, featuring a CD/Radio and air-conditioning. Blue-grey checkerboard style cloth adorns the seats, which are all in good condition with great cushioning and no visible rips or signs of significant wear. There is also an aftermarket reversing camera fitted to the vehicle. We are assured by the owner that everything works as it should in the main cabin.
In the rear section of the vehicle, there are two rows of bench seating, which convert to form the bed, as well as a combination oven/grill, an LPG hob, a stainless steel kitchen sink, an electric heater and a washroom featuring a toilet, sink and shower. There are also a large number of cargo nets, cupboards and drawers, all of which are in good condition.
The owner informs us that they have never used the fridge or oven, but believe they are in working condition, although the LPG tanks do need to be recharged.
It should be noted that a couple of handles are missing from one or two cupboards, part of the roof-lining needs to be refixed in the rear of the cabin, and the rear interior lights are not currently functioning. An awning is also included with the camper, although the owner has never used it.
Overall the interior of the vehicle is solid and in reasonable condition, but could benefit from some light renovation and a thorough valet.
THE EXTERIOR
Externally the camper is very solid. The panels are all straight and in fine condition, with only a couple of minor marks and scratches evident. With a good polish, we believe the paint would come up very well. To the rear, a bike rack and tow-hitch have been fitted, offering extra functionality and practicality. Underneath, the vehicle appears to be solid and in good condition.
According to the owner, the manual side-step below the sliding door has never functioned. There are also two missing wheel-trims. Otherwise, the exterior of the vehicle is presented in good condition.
THE MECHANICS
Ford’s Duratec engines are remarkably robust and are well suited to this kind of application. In this vehicle, the engine has covered just over 80,000 miles, an exceptionally low figure for a 17 year old vehicle. Combined with the MOT and partial service history, this should give buyers confidence that they are purchasing a mechanically sound vehicle with the potential to run well for many years to come.
It certainly sounds in good health, and fires up quickly on ignition. The owner tells us that it rides well and changes gear smoothly. A couple of years ago, they took it to the south of France with no issues whatsoever.
THE APPEAL
Everyone wants a camper right now. And that means that prices are sky-rocketing. This particular vehicle offers an excellent opportunity – it’s solid, reliable, uses popular and proven Ford underpinnings, has a good level of specification and comes with very low mileage and a good partial service history.
With a little TLC to address a few minor issues, this would be a fantastic base for touring the British Isles and even further afield. The bones of this camper are excellent, and it really doesn’t need much work to be brought back to tip-top condition. And even if you just want a basic camper to use as-is, this is still perfect as it comes with a full MOT and all the kit you could reasonably need. A good valet, and she’ll be ready to go.
We can just see you now, pitched up on a cliff-top campsite, relaxing in your camp-chair, glass of something cold in hand as the sun sinks down to the sea.
Just make sure you pack your suncream.
