2003 Volvo V70 R Geartronic

Highlights

  • A great looking V70R in Titanium Grey Peal paint and dark privacy glass
  • Well specified and comfortable interior in Nordkap (dark blue) Soft Leather
  • Winning combination of 300bhp, five-cylinder turbo charged engine and five-speed geartronic automatic transmission

The Background

The V70R first appeared in May 1997 and became an up-to-date replacement for the very popular 850T-5R and 850R. The cars provided a winning combination of stunning performance in a highly practical and comfortable package.
The second generation V70R, as presented here, arrived in 2003 and added a Haldex based all-wheel-drive system to its already impressive specification. The 2.5L turbocharged five-cylinder engine was now pushing out close to 300bhp, giving a 0-60mph time of under six seconds and an electronically limited 155mph top speed.

The History

This particular example was supplied via Volvo Japan in 2003 becoming one of the first second generation V70R’s supplied to the country. The car has clearly benefited from the traditional care and attention paid to cars on the Japanese Domestic Market. The mainly salt-free, high-quality Japanese road network also means that the car appears to be entirely free of any significant corrosion.
The car was imported to the UK and registered here in 2017 by its first UK owner.

The Paperwork

The car is supplied with the current UK V5 in the name of the current owner. The original Japanese book pack is present including some service documentation from its time there.

A hard copy of the current MOT – valid until February 2023 and showing no advisories – is present, as is a number of invoices relating to maintenance work since its 2017 arrival in the UK.

The Interior

The V70R’s interior is comfortable, spacious and sporting in equal measure. The seats, door capping and areas of the dash are dressed in attractive Nordkap (dark blue) Soft Leather which is in great, original condition.
The carpets are a complimentary deep blue and are in good original condition. There are two small areas of wear (pictured) just ahead of each front seat where the heels of shoes have worn some small holes in the carpet.
The V70R is a well specified car too. Refinements in here include electronic climate control, blue chronograph R instrument dials, 4 x CD player and 9 speakers and R Sports seats with electric adjustment and memory settings.

The Exterior

The Titanium Grey Peal exterior paintwork presents very well and suits the car very well indeed. Given this is a 19-year-old car there is the odd mark here and there, but they are only noticeable on close inspection.
From the B pillars back, the car features dark privacy glass which helps give the car an additional level of road presence and individuality.
The 17-inch “Pegasus” five spoke alloys present in very good original condition complete with “R” inscriptions to one spoke. The wheels are shod with 235/45 tyres which appear to have a good level of tread remaining all round.

The Mechanics

The impressive 296 bhp, turbocharged, five-cylinder engine is very much at the heat of the V70R experience. The owner reports that the engine, brakes, transmission, and all other mechanical systems are in excellent working condition.

The Appeal

Volvo created a car with an almost unique set of attributes when it produced the V70R. A capacious and luxurious estate car with almost supercar-slaying performance from the sophisticated turbocharged engine. This was a heady combination back in 2003 and it still is nearly 20 years later.
It is hard to find V70R’s in this type of condition too. A pampered life in Japan has undoubtably helped preserve this example in such great condition. If this is the car you always promised yourself then this is a rare opportunity to acquire such a good and original example.
