The Appeal

Morgan is a name which needs no introduction to those with any knowledge of all things engine powered, a British motoring icon which dates as far back as 1936, when the first variant of the 4-4 (later re-named to the 4/4) was introduced at the London Motor Show. Ever since, the Morgan has been a staple in British motoring history and today holds its head high as an exclusive and highly regarded automaker.
This particular example was originally produced for the German market and was later imported over to Spain with the current custodian of the vehicle, thanks to the love and care taken throughout the years, the charming Morgan looks as good as it did in 2003 when it rolled out of the dealership. Excellent mechanical workings, lustful bodywork and paint, and pure jaw-dropping appeal. There’s everything to love about a 4/4.

The Interior

  • Excellent colourway with black and cream leather
  • Morgan embroidered headrests
  • Walnut dashboard
  • Moto-Lita steering wheel
  • All gauges and dials well presented and functional
  • Carpets present and in lovely condition
  • Seats in excellent condition
You’d be fooled into believing this was a car from the 60’s, or even earlier, given the gorgeous layout of the cockpit - but that’s what Morgan have always been good at, excellently mixing a blend of modern and classic, and it’s become an artform that not many companies even attempt now.
Upon opening the drivers door we can see just how well presented this charming little roadster is, finished with a gorgeous black and cream two-tone leather upholstery, with some Morgan embroidered headrests to ensure you’re reminded you;re getting into something special. Y’know, as if the walnut dash and the stunning three-spoke steering wheel weren’t already hints of pure driving pleasure! The seats themselves remain in extremely well presented condition with no unwelcome scratches or tears in the materials, and all of the stitching and piping appears to be very well kept.
Of course, just ahead of you as you slip into the supportive drivers seat you’re greeted with a stunning three-spoke Moto-Lita steering wheel finished in wooden trim, with the dark walnut dashboard peering through the spokes surrounding the dials. Truly, sometimes less really is more. The steering wheel is in great condition, as is the dashboard and all of the gauges which are housed in it and switchgear.
All floor carpets are present and appear to be in good condition with no areas of excessive wear, and door cards are also very well kept. It’s quite easy to tell that this has been lustfully cared for over the years with no regard to cost - and rightfully so, it’s a car so worthy of the love bestowed upon it.

The Exterior

  • Beautiful Regal Red paintwork
  • Brightwork in excellent condition
  • Wire spoke wheels beautifully maintained
  • Retractable roof in stunning shape with no visible damage
  • Rear stainless luggage rack present and in stunning shape
  • All body panels appear to be free from any damage and panel gaps appear to be factory
Devilishly handsome, isn’t it? It’s easy to understand why the Morgan 4/4 is the longest running production vehicle in the world just from looking at it. Iconic body lines that become instantly recognisable, kept beautifully by careful custodians, there is a high level of appreciation to be demanded here. We love every inch about this roadster.
Starting at the front of the 4/4, the headlights remain in fantastic shape with no clouding or damage on the lenses, and the surrounding brightwork remains in stunning condition - as does the centre grill and the front bumper. The Morgan logo remains sitting proudly atop the dazzling grill and between the voluptuous front wings which present themselves in excellent condition.  The bonnet remains as it should also with its hinges and latches remaining entirely functional.
Moving around to the side, we come into view of the wire spoke wheels which are an absolute heartthrob, as well as the flowing arches which encompass the front and rear wheels. This body style is something which has long disappeared from the automotive world and we’re entirely grateful that Morgan are brave enough to keep it alive. The body panels all appear to be in lovely shape with no apparent damage in the form of scratches or dents, and all of the panel gaps throughout appear to be of OEM fitment.
To the rear, the vehicle retains its stainless steel luggage rack in excellent condition, the spare wheel is present and in great shape and the third high brake light is also present and functional. Paint back here is just as good as everywhere else, as is the brightwork which surrounds the rear lights and the rear bumper bar. There is absolutely nothing to hate on this beautiful example.
The retractable vinyl top is present with the car as are the removable windows, both of which are in fantastic condition with no visible signs of any damage or tears.

The Mechanics

  • Powered by a 1.8 Ford Zetec engine
  • 119bhp at 6000RPM
  • 5-Speed manual transmission
  • Reported to be mechanically sound
  • Superb braking force
  • Tight and precise handling
  • The perfect example of what a lightweight sports car should be
Of course, it may not have the bark and aggression of a Plus 8, but in all honesty, this might play to the 4/4’s advantage here. No big lump of an engine hanging at the front axle, resulting in an extremely well balanced chassis with a generous amount of power for the weight. The 1.8L Ford Zetec is quite a rev-happy little engine that will glide you through the 5-speed transmission without much trouble at all, making it probably one of the better suited engines for an enjoyable blast down a country lane.
The mechanics of this 4/4 are reported to be excellent, and if the exterior is anything to go by then we absolutely believe it. The throttle response is sharp, the brakes are surprisingly powerful, the steering is agile and precise, all exactly what you need in a 2-seater sportster like this. The driving capabilities of these Morgans is what makes them such admired cars, and it’s the main reason they’ve been in production for so many years - nobody can get enough of them, including us.

Summary

This Morgan 4/4 is possibly the best shot at an entry to Morgan ownership, the overall condition is absolutely stunning and it boasts the mechanical workings to match. Surprisingly economical, too! A well cared for 4/4 (to this extent, at least) is becoming a hard find. Don’t let this needle in a haystack fall through your fingertips.
