THE APPEAL
What a fantastic car, the SL55 AMG Kompressor. At over £117,000 when new in base form, the 469hp SL55 is restricted to 155mph but reported to be capable of exceeding 200mph with the restrictor removed. A massive powerhouse of an engine which propels the car from 060mph in a staggering 4.6 seconds.
This particular 2003 Mercedes SL55 comes with a few well chosen extras, including full grey leather, tiptronic steering wheel buttons, Parktronic system which includes parking sensors to the front and rear, there are 18” multi-spoke alloy wheels, and of course, the party trick of the SL, which is the automatic hard top.

THE INTERIOR
- Grey Leather (288A)
- Parktronic system (PTS)
- Premium sound system
- Heated seats
- CD changer
Inside, the SL55 presents well. The electric leather AMG badged seats are finished in light grey leather with a perforated centre section. These are in good order, showing just a few age-related crease marks, as expected from the vehicle's age. The switches to adjust both seats are reported to be working as they should. The door cards are both in good condition, with just the odd scuff mark on the lower section caught by someone's feet.
The dashboard is slightly darker in colour and looks to be in good condition. The instruments have a suede cover surrounding them to reduce glare onto the windscreen, and these are working as they should and have no warning lights illuminated when the engine is running. The odometer displays a reading of 58,204 miles which tallies up with the online MOT history. The switchgear shows little signs of any wear to the buttons or heater dials. There is a small amount of wear to the gearknob in keeping with the mileage.
The carpets have been kept clean with a set of factory AMG mats. They have a small amount of wear but are generally in nice condition, and the main carpet is clean, as is inside the boot.
THE EXTERIOR
- Finished in Tanzanite Blue Metallic (359U)
- Automatic hard top
- Bi-Xenon headlights
- AMG styling pack
- 18” AMG wheels
The lovely Tanzanite Blue Metallic is an excellent option for the SL55 and something a little different to the more common silver. From the front, the headlights and fog lights are in good condition, with no splits or cracks in the lenses. There are no obvious scuffs to the bumper thanks to the Parktronic parking sensors; there are a small amount of age-related stone chips, but nothing too excessive. The bonnet aligns straight and even, with an equal gap running down each side.
The SL55 looks to be in good order, with the doors aligning as they should and have a matching panel gap. There are no dings or dents to point out, and the windows are all in good condition, with no apparent scratches noted. The SL’s party trick hard top is also in good order and opens and closes as Mercedes intended with no hesitation.
At the rear, the all red/smoked light clusters are free from any splits or cracks and look great against the Tanzanite Blue Metallic. There are no scuffs or chips to mention to the bumper, and the badges are in the correct place with a bright finish to them. The multispoke 18” AMG alloy wheels do have some white worm under the lacquer, but this could be a job tackled by your local wheel refurbisher after an inspection. The tyres look in good condition with many miles left on the tread.
THE MECHANICS
- 5.5 litre Supercharged V8
- Five-speed automatic transmission
- AMG exhaust
- Active Body Control Suspension (ABC)
What a great car! 5.5 litres of supercharged AMG power with just 58,204 miles covered. The vehicle was last serviced in January 2021 at Mercedes-Benz Chelsea, and is in fine fettle starting up as it should and sounds fantastic.
The vendor reports the car to drive as it should, pulling, as you can imagine, exceptionally well through the gears, which have a smooth change. When it comes to stopping, drilled discs on each corner and AMG calipers bring the SL55 to a stop in a straight line.
SUMMARY
The SL Mercedes is probably the perfect grand tourer, but the SL55 AMG completely takes it to a new level!
This AMG has covered approximately, on average, 1,000 miles per year for the past few years, not really being used to its full potential.
An excellent car for anyone looking to step inside a top of the range grand tourer and enjoy the whole AMG experience, which will not disappoint in any way, shape or form. What are you waiting for? Your SL55 AMG awaits!
