The Appeal
Building upon the foundations of the outgoing 3200 GT the 4200 GT would feature revised styling and a bigger, Ferrari derived V8. With all of the perfect ingredients for a proper Italian grand tourer, you will never tire of getting in and driving this beast.
This particular example has been looked after extremely well for the past 20 years, the service book is well stamped and more importantly, the clutch has been changed within the past few thousand miles, the gearbox also had a service at this point. It now should drive like a dream out on the roads.
The History and Paperwork
- Throughout its life, this 4200 GT has been looked after properly, receiving a lot of love recently with a clutch change
- The car begins its life at a Maserati dealer in Birmingham, specified in Blu Nettuno with beige leather, it would then travel down to London
- It would go through a few owners before we encounter it in Hertfordshire where it is being looked after by McGrath Maserati
- There are some large invoices from this time, one from 2014 evidence some repairs to the leather on the driver’s seat and a slight repair to the gearstick gaiter
- By far the largest invoice from this time is for a whopping £4171.30, this importantly includes a clutch and flywheel change.
- After its big clutch job at 49,000 miles, it then goes back to McGrath a thousand miles later to get a new clutch master cylinder.
- Most recently in 2020 the car went in for a service and to rectify a misfire. As this was only 1,000 miles ago you should be able to enjoy this car for a while before needing to worry about a service

The Interior

Nothing quite hits the same as sitting in an Italian GT car from the early noughties, they are filled with leather and bucket loads of character. The interior of this 4200 GT is no different, leather adorns most of the panels and it is fitted with an infotainment screen that would’ve been space age 20 years ago.
If we start by looking at the beige electrically operated seats, we can see that they are presented in good condition. As you’d imagine there is a bit of wear to the driver’s seat but only superficial as there aren’t any nasty rips or tears to the leather. Even the bolsters are in good condition. The passenger seat is in very good condition with only slight signs of being used.
Unsurprisingly the two rear seats look like they’ve never been sat in, so they are obviously presented in very good condition. Should you wish to take rear passengers then all you need to do is pull the handle on the side of the seat and the seats pull forwards elegantly on their electric motors, they then return to their original position effortlessly.

As will probably see there is some slight wear to the switch gear on the centre console and the gear stick, but these just prove that this car has been used properly during its time on the road and not been tucked away in a garage somewhere.
There are a couple of great features within the interior, the first is the sport button nestled between the electric window switchgear it should bring out the true character of this Italian stallion. Another, rather Italian, feature is the speedometer that goes all the way to 200 mph. This rather ambitious speedo sits next to the rev counter which shows the redline at 7,500 at these revs the interior will be filled with a symphony of V8 noise.
Overall, the interior is presented in good condition. There are some slight areas of wear, but the important features like the seats and air-conditioning all work and are a pleasure to interact with.

Maserati and Giugiaro went with the less is more thinking when they designed the 4200 GT, a few tweaks were made from the outgoing 3200 GT but then again ‘if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it’. The 4200 GT is a wonderful looking car that looks quick sitting still.
Finished in the stunning Blu Nettuno paint with silver alloy wheels the exterior of this noughties GT looks stunning. The long sweeping bonnet and low-slung nose signify that this GT means business and with the trident sitting pride of place in the middle of the grille everyone else knows that you’re driving something special. Although the colour of the paint looks stunning in the sun, a quick polish may be required to make it pop again.
From the rear, it looks just as good as it does from the front. The shiny quad tailpipes hint at the V8 beast that sits under the bonnet, this exhaust has been slightly modified with an X-pipe which allows the sound to resonate better and produces an absolute cacophony of noise. Just above these tailpipes, you find the rear tail lights which are presented with no fogging or any obvious cracking to these lenses.
The current owner stated that if they were to keep the car, the one job they would carry out on the exterior would be a new seal on the rear window. But this shouldn’t be a difficult or expensive job to carry out.
Overall, the exterior is in good condition all of the paintwork and body panels look good with no apparent paint bubbling around and the intricate alloys are in great condition. After a quick session with a detailer, the paint will be bought back to its former glory, and it will be the pride of your collection.
The Mechanics

Maserati has been at the forefront of sports car production for over 100 years now with some amazing pieces of machinery leaving their factory. Throughout their history, Maserati had a long standing rivalry with Ferrari, but in the late ‘90s, Ferrari bought a large share in the company, and as such the 4200 GT has a lot of Ferrari derived parts fitted.
The biggest, and most special, Ferrari part fitted is the F136R 4.2l V8 engine. Revving to 7,500 rpm this V8 is incredibly Italian sounding absolutely amazing with its X-pipe exhaust fitted. Luckily for you, this engine has been well maintained throughout its life and there has been a major service carried out recently.
To transfer all 385hp to the rear wheels the clutch must be up to the job. Amazingly the clutch was changed a few thousand miles ago so there shouldn’t be any slipping as you pull away from the lights.
The manual 6-speed gearbox has been looked after too, with a new filter fitted at the time of the clutch replacement.
As the world goes more and more digital it is important to get into an analogue modern classic once in a while to remind yourself of how engaging cars used to be. And with this 4200 have a big V8, a manual 6-speed box, and power sent to the rear wheels it really is a hoot to drive.

With a lot of history, major works carried out recently, and the Ferrari engine pulling you along there is no better feeling than out on the open road. As this is the GT version it will be very comfortable on a long drive across countries to get to some of the best driving roads on the planet.
