The Appeal

When Audi reflected on its heritage to create the original TT, it created a car that achieved the remarkable feat of looking back to the past whilst simultaneously looking forward. The flowing lines referenced the original NSU RO80 but they clothed the technology of a very modern car.
The 225bhp 1.8litre turbocharged TT with Quattro 4WD delivered slingshot performance on the straights and limpet-like grip in the corners. It was instantly popular and a convertible version was quickly added to the range to broaden the appeal even further.
This 2001 225bhp convertible is tastefully finished in Steppengras metallic but the interior hides a surprise - there you’ll find the very sought-after Optic Brown ‘baseball’ leather interior. With a full service history, highly detailed maintenance record and long MOT, this looks like a great example of a car that currently has growing appeal to classic enthusiasts.

The History and Paperwork

The Interior

  • Excellent Optic Brown ‘baseball’ interior is a fantastic ‘surprise and delight’ feature and sought-after by TT enthusiasts
  • Mk1 TT interiors are a particularly lovely place to be, combining superb Audi build quality with some clever design touches
  • Everything works as it should and is in good condition for the car’s age and mileage
  • Some wear to driver’s seat bolster and base but not unsightly or obviously requiring attention
  • Heated seats
  • No wear to switches, which can be a common issue with this era of Audi
  • Slight scuffs and wear to the gear knob, handbrake shroud and glove box lid
  • CD mounted boot changer with original Audi Concert head unit behind TT branded cover
  • Excellent unmarked carpets throughout with similar over mats fitted
  • Audi first aid kit in the boot alongside complete factory toolkit and spacesaver spare
  • The seller tells us that everything works as it should including:
    • Instrument cluster recently serviced
    • Air conditioning recently checked over
  • The seller states that there are three minor faults to be aware of, all common to the Mk1 Roadster:
    • The heated rear screen does not work due to broken terminals
    • Faulty alarm horn that has been disconnected but not replaced
    • Central storage cover between seats has broken latch and does not open

The Exterior

  • Attractive Steppengras dark green metallic paintwork in very good condition, only a small bubble of delamination around the rear Quattro badge to note
  • Clean, clear Xenon headlamps with none of the misting that can afflict this age of Audi
  • Quality Michelin 17inch tyres fitted
  • Alloy wheels refurbished in 2017 and in very good condition, only minor marks visible on the nearside front and offside rear rims
  • Clean, unmarked door shuts indicate careful use
  • Suspension turrets appear solid with no visible deterioration
  • Sills both very good, one side showing very minor corrosion likely caused by stone chips
  • Roof in very good condition but may benefit from a clean and reproof to improve the colour
  • Some light stone chips to the front, including two small touched-in chips on the bonnet edge
  • Some surface rust visible under car and this was noted on the recent MOT advisory
  • Wind deflector
  • Seller states that the roof works as it should and without issue

The Mechanics

  • Lauded VAG 1.8litre BAM engine developing 225bhp through the Quattro system
  • 6spd manual gearbox
  • Timing belt and water pump replaced in 2020 10,000 miles ago
  • Haldex oil service undertaken at the same time
  • Highly detailed breakdown of all maintenance conducted during the car’s life included with photographs
  • Rear springs, front and rear discs and pads and spark plugs replaced recently
  • Full service history showing 17 stamps, a mix of main dealer and specialist garages
  • Alternator changed in 2016
  • New battery fitted in 2022

Summary

The original TT achieved the seemingly impossible: it took an icon, the NSU RO80, and created another one. Extremely quick with astonishing levels of grip, Audi’s pocket rocket was the finely balanced, thoughtfully engineered sports car you could actually live with.
This well maintained Roadster is the desirable 225bhp Quattro version finished in fetching Steppengras with that surprise and delight ‘baseball’ interior. Recently serviced and MOT’d it is highly presentable and for enthusiasts of these great little cars, or anyone after a capable convertible, it looks very enticing.
