The Background

The Alfa Romeo GTV Cup is a limited edition run inspired by the one-make race series in Italy. It has quite the boast of exclusivity as only 419 cars were built in total and only 155 RHD models all of which had the 3.0L, 24V, V6 engines. Each car has a plaque placed in the centre console denoting its manufacture number (this one being number 11 for the RHD models).

Differences between the cup and the normal GTV are the front and rear spoilers, side skirts, wheel arch vents and the titanium-like finish of the 17” teledial alloys.

The History

The current owner purchased this Alfa as it had been a dream to own one, the plan was to pass the car on down to the younger generation however a different opportunity has arisen, so the decision was made to part ways with the Alfa.

The current owner is the 4th in line to take custody of this beautiful sports coupe and the previous owner purchased from a gentleman who had the car for a short time after buying the car from the original and mystical careful lady owner who purchased and cared for the car so well during her 18 years of ownership.

The car comes with a myriad of enthusiast themed extras as well as an extremely comprehensive history file, giving us a clear indication of just how well this car has been looked after.

The paperwork

The paperwork given with this Alfa is very impressive, every receipt, invoice, Mot certificate and Tax disc has been kept and filed away fastidiously. Many of invoices are for regular maintenance and service-related items. There is also a full suite of owner’s manuals, enthusiast items and even the original purchase paperwork from the Alfa Romeo dealership the first owner brought the car from.
A summary of large work receipts is given below:
  • Power flex top engine mounts – Alfa Aid – 31/07/2020
  • O/S lower rear arm, N/S lower rear arm – Italia Speed – 18/08/2016
  • Window regulator/motor assembly – Italia Speed – 01/06/2018
  • Cam belt change to schedule – Bristol Engineering – 10/05/2012
  • Timing belt, water pump, aux belt, valve cover gaskets, suspension arms – Italia Speed – 24/05/2017
* The cambelt and water pump have been changed at 51,379 miles in 2017, this was confirmed by Italia Speed in Newbury as the second page of the invoice was lost by a previous owner. *
Please do look through the gallery below at the paperwork that comes with the car as it would be too much to list in the advert.

The Interior

The half leather, half fabric seats are in near new condition with little wear and no rips, tears, fraying or staining to any of the four seats in the cabin. This extends to the condition of the dash, switch gear, steering wheel and gear lever, all touch points in the car are in fantastic condition for the age of the vehicle.

The DAB radio works as it should and the speakers sound great. The carpets and dash are in great condition as well with no cracks, stains, rips tears or wear to anything in the cabin.

The Exterior

Beautifully designed by Pininfarina, the exterior styling of the GTV cup was planned to re-establish the sporty coupe tradition of Alfa’s for the 1990’s but dates back to 1987 from the initial renderings from Enrico Fumia of Pininfarina. The design might have been divisive at the time, but it has aged exceptionally well and is unlike anything else on the road today.
This Alfa is no different, the bodywork is in fantastic condition and after recent bodywork to restore the paint on the front and rear bumpers (a common issue is the UV degradation of the paint colour to specifically these areas) the outside is back to its best.
The 17” teledial alloy wheels are in fantastic condition however there is very minor curbing on one alloy and some paint flaking on another. We’d imagine a collector might want to restore the fantastic looking alloys to finish the car off, showcasing the gorgeous red brake callipers behind them.
To conclude then, the bodywork on this Alfa is gorgeous, the paint is in very good condition and apart from the recently restored pieces, is all original. All electrics work and the Ragazon exhaust compliments the ‘cut off’ style rear end nicely. The wheels are in good condition apart from the aforementioned (if we’re being picky) and the tyres are in good condition with good tread depth as well.

The Mechanics

Being a low owner car, this Alfa’s history is easy to follow and from initial glance, the mechanicals of the Alfa have been exceptionally attended to. This is a very good thing as this Alfa is set to perform sublimely for many years (assuming the care continues with the new owner).

The parts and receipts are all mainly from one source, which is the same place as the car was purchased, and the service stamps have all been from either the initial dealer or Alfa specialists. Selenia engine oil has always been used meaning different grades of oil will not have contributed to any excessive wear on the engine and as mentioned above, the cambelt and water pump were changed at 51,000 miles.
The 3.0L, 24 valve V6 engine is in fine fettle, and sounds absolutely animalistic with the full Ragazon exhaust, with a satisfying burbling during idle and a literal roar under load with pops and crackles (the good kind) during lift off. It really fits the look and performance of this special edition bearing in mind it was based off the race car version of the model.
In summary, the engine and drivetrain of this Alfa has been very well looked after during the 3 owner’s custody of the vehicle and with continued maintenance the car will continue to function admirably for a long time. To clarify also, there were no suspect or worrying noises from the drivetrain on start up or during driving from the car as well.

The Appeal

The GTV was described by automotive journalist supreme, Jeremy Clarkson, as one of the best sports cars of its time in 1998 as well as being listed in the top 30 in the ‘Top 100 cars of 2001’. The GTV cup was the ultimate version of the GTV and one that, to enthusiasts as least was the most desirable. Today the GTV cups command good prices and are highly sought after by Alfa Romeo followers.

This Alfa is number 11 of the 155 RHD examples that arrived on UK shores, how many are left, we don’t know but we can imagine that 155 number is reduced 21 years on, further adding to the rarity and exclusivity of this genuine Cup model. This is a beautifully maintained and cared for car, with a powerful engine that sounds sublime thanks to the Ragazon exhaust system.

If you’re an Alfa fan born in the ‘90s this car should be ticking a lot of boxes for you right now and the enjoyment of the model hasn’t waned at all. This Alfa has a solid history and care record that is easily traced through the paperwork showing the care it’s received and we think it should be a very enticing prospect to own for the near future.
