The Appeal
Fun, lightweight and a strong dynamic rival to its 911 big brother, the 986 era Porsche Boxster saw the marque move back towards its roots in creating simple sports cars with the sole aim of providing pure unadulterated driving pleasure.

Understated, yet effortlessly classy, the interior of a Porsche Boxster is one which perfectly blends comfort, with quality craftsmanship and a sporty overtone. The Boxster ticks all the important boxes one looks for in a performance roadster. Leather upholstery, sports seats and a solid collection of mod cons and amenities, it's all here in the 986.
Two marvellous grey bucket style sports seats take precedence within the cabin, both presenting well with good quality leather still rich in its grey hue. There are however rather understandably some signs of wear to be seen here, most notably some blemishing around the driver's seat bolstering but nothing to cause worry or detract from the cabin’s quality.
The leather dashboard with its flowing lines has been well preserved and as such is still in great order, the same can be said for the iconic 3 spoke leather steering wheel and sculpted centre console piece. The central entertainment cluster and various switchgear that sits around it are all of a great standard and exhibit very little in the way of wear.
A piece of artwork in themselves, the door panels, upholstered in a mix of leather and plush carpeting are still factory fresh in appearance. The carpeting, in a lighter contrasting colour to the black and grey leather, is of a brilliant standard, this standard continues into the carpet in the cabin of the car, which coats the floors, footwells and the centre tunnel.
Courtesy of its mid engined layout, the Boxster boasts storage areas at both the front and rear. Both areas are of a great standard and boast clean quality carpeting.

This Boxster S is certainly gorgeous from an aesthetic perspective. A subtle silver hue drapes its way over the flowing lines of the car and provides a glorious shine. The paintwork itself is in a great condition, bearing just a few minor marks and signs of ageing as to be expected of a now 22 year old car, but still presents excellently.
A party piece of this particular Boxster, is the removable hard top. Finished in a matching shade of Silver, the hard top can be lifted away with ease after the push and pull of just a few locking mechanisms. Revealing a separate soft top underneath which, having seen very limited usage throughout its lifetime, presents excellently, boasting high quality black fabric and a clean rear screen.
A factory rear wind deflector screen is present with the car and can be fitted behind the seating area to reduce the bluster within the cabin during open top driving.
5 spoke Porsche alloy wheels are the order of the day at ground level, with four excellent examples finding homes at each corner of the Boxster. All four are of a brilliant standard and present as such. A fifth spare wheel sits within a bespoke cover in the front storage area.

The beating heart of this Boxster, situated right in the centre of the car comes in the form of an engine hailing from one of Porsche’s finest hours. Denoted by the all important S badging on the rear tailgate, the 3.2 litre 6 cylinder motor is a true mechanical marvel.
Punchy and raw but equally capable of being more subtle and refined, this excellent performance piece needs no introduction among Porsche enthusiasts and has already cemented itself as one of the all time great Porsche engines.
Thanks, largely due to its continual regular servicing, the motor fires into life with ease, with an excellent tone being produced courtesy the twin tipped rear mounted exhaust.
The car provides an excellent dynamic drive, with the mid mounted engine keeping the weight well balanced. The exquisite manual gearbox mated to the engine is in great order and cycles through the gears effortlessly and smoothly. The suspension provides a comfortable, perfectly balanced ride and the braking system, courtesy of new discs and pads, brings the car to a stop with ease.
Summary
Spoken of in hush whispers among enthusiasts and purists, the Porsche Boxster is often said to outrank its flagship big brother, the 911. Combining all the things that make the 911 great, in a more simple, raw and what is often seen as a better value package, the Boxster is a good safe bet for one looking to get themselves into Porsche ownership or just looking for a great usable modern classic roadster.
