The Appeal
This is a very rare BMW 316TI, complete with the “California Top” (also known as the “Open Air”) roof in a high specification. Only a small number of these were ever made for the UK market and even fewer were made in this classy colour combination of Cosmo Black Metallic over a very tidy red leather interior.
This particular 316TI features the later 1.9 M43 engine that provided a bit more grunt as seen in many Z3s. Mated to the 5-speed manual transmission, it makes for a fine driving experience.
Despite the car covering circa 82,000 miles and being over 22 years old, the car presents itself in impeccable order throughout thanks to careful long-term ownership and often being stored in a dry garage. Given the excellent condition of the car, provenance and California roof, this 316TI presents a rare opportunity to acquire one of these fantastic BMW hatchbacks that’s a bit different to the norm.
History and paperwork

- Original owner’s manuals
- Binder full of MOTs, maintenance and service invoices
- Stamped service book
- Four working keys with fobs
- Long-term ownership, with frequent dry-storage

The Interior
- M sports steering wheel
- Tanin Rot Oregon Leather
- Electric windows and door mirrors
- Radio/cassette system with 6 CD changer
- Full length, electrically operated Webasto sunroof
- Air-conditioning
- Original toolkit, first aid kit and luggage tie down straps present in boot
The interior is presented in exceptional condition for the age, with minimal wear and tear throughout. It’s quite hard to believe that this car has covered over 80,000 miles. The rear seats look like they haven't been sat in and the fronts are showing minimal wear.
Even the M sport badging on the steering wheel hasn't faded. The headlining and switchgear are in great condition too, with no damage evident. The only real areas to note are the driver’s side bolster has slight wear and the driver’s side original car mat has some light soiling.
The vendor tells us that all electrics in the car are believed to be in great working order. The interior lights operate as they should, the air-conditioning is ice cold, the auxiliary heating works, the sunroof works, the original radio and sound system work perfectly as do the central locking and windows. Overall, the interior on this charming 3-Series Compact is as close to being showroom fresh as you’d imagine a car of this age could be.
Exterior
- Smart Cosmos Black Metallic paintwork
- Original 16” Style 25 wheels
- Working parking sensors
- Factory/dealership fitted BMW mudguards
Presented in BMW Cosmo Black Metallic, the exterior is in fabulous condition with only minimal wear and tear. Obviously, as this is an original 22 year old car, it is not completely blemish free. However, there are no significant scuffs, scratches, dings and dents and overall it really does present itself in great condition.
Thankfully, that party piece of a roof is in great condition with no scuffs, tears or UV damage, and smooth electrical operation. The wheels look to be in their original polished finish yet don't show any signs of curbing, lacquer peel or corrosion. The only area to note is that there appears to be some touch in correction on the front bumper and some marks where door edge protectors were fitted.
Unlike many BMWs of this period, the arches on this example look to be in good condition with no rust and down the side of the car there are minimal to no car park dings, scuffs or dents.
All of the badges, light lenses, windows and trim elements are in excellent condition and present very well. The car’s overall presence is fantastic, thanks to careful ownership, minimal recent use and the fact that it has been regularly garage stored.
Mechanics
- Four-cylinder M43 1.9 engine
- Approximately 1,000 miles covered annually since 2012
- The vendor tells us the underside is in good condition
- Engine bay is clean and tidy, with no obvious leaks
- MOT till January 2023
- Fresh Firestone tyres all round
Due to careful, long term ownership and minimal use, the vendor tells us that the car drives very well, stopping well and pulling strongly. We’re informed the clutch and gearbox feel strong, that the steering is direct and, overall, the car is a real pleasure to pilot along a nice British B-road.
It truly appears to have been taken care of over the years. The only current MOT advisories are relating to worn discs and a bushing. The car feels tight, with no obvious suspension knocks when driving. Recent works this car benefits from are four recent Firestone tyres, wheel alignment, wiper blades, brake pipes, brake fluid change, service and rocker cover gasket.
Summary
If you’re after a very rare and quirky BMW, this BMW 316TI may just be the one for you. You will be hard pressed to find another, especially in such fine condition and featuring such a comprehensive service and maintenance record.
The roof on this car, coupled with BMW’s famous driving balance, poise and the nippy four-cylinder engine, makes for a very pleasant drive - especially whenever the sun decides to come out.
This 316TI “California Top” would make for a great and quirky daily or perfect modern classic thanks to BMW’s build quality.
