The Background

A staple of the world's roads the first Audi A4 would roll off the production line at the Ingolstadt factory in early 1995. Based on the Volkswagen Group B5 platform it would feature a front-mounted engine and a front-wheel-drive layout.

After a facelift in 1999, the A4 would receive a couple of spicy variants. From the bog-standard 1.6l with 100 bhp up to the RS4 with a huge 2.7l V6 Bi-Turbo with a huge 376bhp. Since the first introduction of the S4 and RS4 in the late 1990s, these letters have been synonymous with extremely powerful and capable saloon/estate cars. These cars are now revered by certain circles, and they have already started to experience a period of appreciation.

The History

Originally a car destined for the Japanese market, this S4 was almost immediately imported straight to North London. It would seem to stay with the same owner within the same area from its arrival in June 2001 until its first sale in this country in 2018. When, in 2018, the current owner picked it up it only moved from North London down to South London.

Within their ownership, the current owner has not been able to use the car as intended due to the amount of traffic in the area.

With the first owner keeping this car serviced by Audi main dealers coupled with the small amount of use from the current owner, this S4 is still in great condition and ready for the new owner to enjoy the power and emotion of this fast Audi.

The Paperwork

The new owner will get a little bit of paperwork with this spectacular car. The usual and all-important V5 is present which details only one previous owner from new, almost unheard of for a fast Audi of this age. There is the most recent MOT certificate it also shows the small distance covered by this car over two years and indeed over its lifetime. If you take a look at the mileage, it is about 70,000 miles under the UK average for this kind of car. NOTE: The vendor has confirmed that the vehicle will come with a fresh MOT.

One of the most important documents that comes with the car is the full Audi service history, the stamps come from the same Audi dealer in Whetstone, North London, from 2001 to 2018. An excellent example of how well this car has been looked after. Within the same leather-bound info packet there are also all of the original Audi instruction manuals for things like the telephone and the radio.

The Interior

The interior is a great match of the late 90’s Audi design ethos bought together with carbon fibre accents. With this being the almost top of the line version of the A4 there are many features in the interior that you wouldn’t usually see in an A4 of this age. These include the original car telephone (a cool piece of modern retro design), the carbon fibre flashes on the door, across the dash and down to the gear knob. There is also what appears to be a rather early in-car sat-nav system, with the Audi navigation workings in the boot and the button for ‘nav’ next to the handbrake this car is more equipped than you may have first thought.

Although this car is 22 years old there are only a couple minor of marks that the interior has picked up over its time. The most noticeable is what appears to be a slight water stain on the front passenger seat. However, this could be as easily fixed as a quick session with a wet vac with a detailer.

The rest of the electronically operated Recaro fabric seats are in good condition, with no signs of rips or tears, this is more than likely due to its relatively low mileage.

Apart from this one slight mark the rest of the interior is presented in great condition. The original carpets are like new, the ashtray is clear (pointing to the fact this car has never been smoked in), the cup holder still pops out with a positive motion and the sunroof doesn’t appear to let any water in.

Overall the new owner will be getting a car that is as good to sit in as it is to take to the max.

The Exterior

The exterior of the VW Group B5 platform is instantly recognisable in all of its guises. The 2000 S4 was a very conservative design, with lots of curves and not many sharp angles it plays straight into the hands of anyone who appreciates a sleeper. The bodywork does not allude to the bi-turbo V6 under the bonnet.

The exterior of this S4 is in good condition with a few marks around the bumpers that show that the car has been used throughout its life and not parked up in a garage collecting dust. The front and rear bumpers are the worst offenders when it comes to letting the exterior down, there are a few scuffs that the new owner may want to get sorted. There is also slight paint cracking above the off-side rear wheel arch. Apart from these minor scuffs and bruises the rest of the exterior is in good condition with beautifully simple lines it should not age like some other cars of this era already have.

The four alloy wheels are all in great condition with practically no signs of any curb marks and with the Audi centre caps fitted they too are a wonderfully simple design to both look at and keep clean.
Overall, with all the little marks taken into account, this is still a rare and great looking car, you are hard pushed to find another S4 these days and soon they may even become collectors cars.

The Mechanics

Back in 2000 the Audi version of the B5 platform came with a few different engines and drive train options. From the smallest 1.6L up to a Bi-Turbo 2.7L V6, it was a highly adaptable platform that proved extremely successful.
This version was fitted with the latter, the incredibly capable 2.7L Bi-Turbo V6, pumping out 250bhp to all four wheels through Audis, race banned, Quattro system and an engaging 6-speed manual gearbox, it could keep up with almost anything back in the day. With all of these high-end systems, the B5 S4 was a brilliant drive as capable on the track as it was on the road.

This S4 is in fine fettle, it fired up with no issue and moved into position for the photos without issue. Due to being within the ULEZ area and the fact it was not taxed or insured we were unable to go on a test drive so we cannot comment on the finer driving dynamics. But at face value, this S4 looks like it is all there and ready to go.

The new owner will be picking up a car that is very fast and very capable, you could easily embarrass a few supercar owners with the way that this four-door family saloon drives. This is one of those cars that is engaging and rewarding to drive, a great combination for any prospective buyer.

The Appeal

The 2000 S4 was able to garner legendary status when it was introduced in the early noughties and 22 years on it still has the same curb appeal as it did back then. This is one of those cars that you can use anywhere, with the trick Quattro system you will be able to transfer all of the power onto the road and look like a driving god.

Many examples on the UK market have higher mileage than this car and they also won’t have as comprehensive service history as this one does with every service coming from an Audi dealer in the first ownership.

These cars have already started to experience a period of appreciation some cars take multiple decades to achieve. With all of the modern toys and proper drivetrain, this is a type of car that will, sadly, never be seen again. This is your chance to own a brilliant example of German engineering.
