THE APPEAL
When the Jeep Cherokee XJ series arrived from across the pond in 1993, it brought a slice of the American sport utility 4x4 to the UK market. And for once, the steering wheel was on the right side as well!
The second generation Cherokee was dubbed the first American compact SUV and the boxy 4x4 quickly became an icon. It offered the practicality of a family wagon with the traction of all wheel drive.
This particular 1998 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Limited is a remarkable low mile and low owner survivor that appears to have escaped the hard life that many of these compact 4x4 were put through.

According to the seller, this particular Cherokee was bought new as a 65th birthday present by the wife of the first owner. He sadly died not long after and his wife couldn’t bring herself to part with the car. It was eventually sold to DCC Chigwell Independent Jeep Specialists in 2016, when it was acquired by the current owner. At this stage it had covered just 14,000 over 17 years.
THE INTERIOR

• Sand Leather Interior

• Cruise Control

The Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Limited came with a very decent specification in 1998, one that holds its own even today. Creature comforts such as a leather interior, electric front seats, air-conditioning, plus cruise control coupled with the automatic gearbox make this a very comfortable and usable 4x4.
Having covered just under 38,000 miles, the interior of this Cherokee is in really good shape and has escaped the abuse that most high mile examples would have been put through. There is minimal wear to the Sand colour leather seats and the door cards and carpets a very nice indeed. There is some damage to the drivers sun visor, but the rest of the headliner is in good condition with only a few marks evident.

The steering wheel shows no sign of wear and the fascia and switchgear look as good as new, as does the wood inlay.
The air conditioning blows nice and cold and the radio works with a functioning external electric aerial as well.
One of the benefits of the 2nd generation Cherokee is its large boot space and with the rear seats dropped down, it can carry a lot of stuff. Again the boot area is very tidy and comes with the original spare wheel and wheel cover, plus a rare Jeep boot liner and tonneau cover.
THE EXTERIOR
On the outside the Moss Green Metallic paint still holds it shine. And it retains all its original decals, side stripes and dealer stickers from new. As the Cherokee is 24 years old, it does have some blemishes and scuffs present. There are car park dings to the doors and some scuffs to the front and rear bumpers. There is also some graffiti scratches on the rear hatch which is documented in the photos.
However the rest of the car presents very well and has not been detailed or restored by the seller. The body work appears to be rust free.
THE MECHANICS
• 4.0 litre straight six
• Automatic transmission
• Recent service
• New exhaust

The Cherokee starts on the button and the straight six sounds good. A new mild steel exhaust and catalyst was installed by the seller in April this year.
We travelled in the 4x4 to the photography location along some gravel lanes and across fields and it drove well with no squeaks or knocks from the suspension. The seller states he replaced all the suspension rubbers over the past 7 years of ownership.
It was last serviced on 27th May this year and the tyres have covered around 3,000 since they were fitted.
The seller adds that a collection of spares come with the 4x4, which includes a complete rear axle and Dana 44 differential. There are also some odds and sods, which includes rear lamp lenses (undamaged) and Jeep repair manuals. There is also an original dog guard for the boot included in the sale.
SUMMARY
This 1998 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Limited really is a remarkable survivor and to come across one in such original and unmolested condition is very rare indeed. The chances of finding another example with such low miles and ownership is going to be very hard to repeat.
