Highlights
・Supercharged 4.0L V8 saloon
・Low mileage with Jaguar service history
・370 BHP super saloon
The History
The Jaguar XJ symbolises the classic British luxury saloon, the (X308) model was the third and final evolution of the XJ40 platform and came in many different guises, including this Supercharged XJR version, good for 370bhp with outrageous performance in a 4 door car for its time this was the Jaguar equivalent of the German AMG and M models, albeit with way more luxury inside, walnut trim, perforated black leather and plenty of comfort to boot.
The Background
The 4 litre V8 engine has a reputation for being strong not just in performance but mechanically as well, this example has been looked after by Jaguar dealerships up until 2016 and done very little mileage since. With JLR looking to go fully electric by 2025 this is an opportunity to hark back to a raw and stylish V8 supercharged saloon that was the back bone of the companies racing heritage.
The Paperwork
Registered in June 1998 by Stratstone’s of Mayfair this example has been looked after by Jaguar dealers right up until 2016 when it was on 44,300 miles. The last three owners have all been related and due to the sellers growing Jaguar collection it is time to depart with the XJR, due to storage as he lives in central London.
There are MOT’s to collaborate the little use it has had in recent years with the most recent one being completed in May 2021 at 46144 miles. Receipts are also present for tyres, batteries and smaller items, anything else that has been covered was in the servicing at the Jaguar dealerships, no expense has been spared in looking after this car mechanically. Original book pack and manuals are present along with the cars radio code. Three keys and two remotes are supplied and both working.
The Interior
The Jaguar build quality inside was for its time excellent and this shows in the vehicles interior, all switches, dashboard and housings are in very good condition for a twenty-three year old model.
All electrics work as does the cars radio antenna which retracts like new, as you would expect the drivers bolster is worn and ripped and will need some attention, as do the leather seats as there are some marks on the rear centre armrest, headrests and edge of front seats, a good clean of the leather upholstery should bring everything back to a good standard, the markings on the seats appear to be where it has been sitting around and would suggest to be mildew marks. Door sills are in good order with no visible signs of rusting and door cards again are in good condition for the year.
The headlining has dropped and is sagging, mainly in the rear of the car which will need an expert to rectify, this does not impede at the front of the car at all.
Boot area is tidy and houses a spare tyre along with new battery, note that there is no visible rust around the recess area, a prominent spot on these cars.
In the boot is also a Jaguar CD 6 disc auto changer which would have been an option from new.
The Exterior
The cars exterior condition does require attention, main areas are a large crack on the front bonnet, scuffs on the near side rear bumper corner, very small bubbling on the off side rear window bottom right corner, and chips on the near side front bumper along with light scratches which are shown in the photo gallery.
The outside of the vehicle does require paintwork on the aforementioned bonnet, concerning the rest of the vehicle a good detail will expose whether you would look at painting the rest of the car or doing some local areas of paint, these are general wear and tear marks, wing mirror casings on the edge, alloy wheels have light scuffs on the edges but are in good order and are original wheels that came with the XJR model. There is a slight crack apparent on the top of the near side rear pillar. Tyres have good tread.
The photos show areas of the trims near the glasswork that are prone to rusting, all these areas are clean and the inside of the arches are also free of damage and rust that we can see.
The Mechanics
As mentioned this car has been looked after service wise by main Jaguar dealerships in and around the London area, the Supercharger is working perfectly according to the owner, and idles perfectly with that V8 rumble. No electrical issues are present to our knowledge and with a fresh years MOT present the car is ready to drive away.
The Appeal
In a world of SUVs and electric cars being the norm this Jaguar is the perfect option to enjoy on the motorway or country roads, it is fast, comfortable and is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. That massive boot will accommodate luggage for the whole family and the supercharged engine is a soundtrack to grace any journey, with this low mileage example celebrating the Best of British with this performance Jag.
