The Appeal
Last of the air-cooled 911s, the 993 was, in the opinion of many, the last model to carry the DNA of the original design. Handsomely proportioned and beautifully built, they are an evergreen classic. The Carrera 4S built on this pedigree with an all-wheel drive system, powerful 3.6-litre engine and the wide body from the Turbo model.
Here we have a smart and highly original example of the breed. Finished in classic Guards Red, with just two owners from new and benefitting from just 68,782Km on the clock, it’s a well preserved machine. We love the fact that it hasn’t been modified, instead being kept to factory specification. So this suave supercar is just as it would have been back in the late 90s. As such, it’s ideal for any enthusiast or collector as a shining example of the air-cooled 911 platform.

The Interior
- Black leather upholstery
- Electric windows and door mirrors
- Factory fitted electric metal sunroof
- Electrically adjustable seats
- Modern CD/radio
The black leather of the seats appears to be original and is in genuine, naturally worn condition with a warm and attractive patina. There’s a little creasing and marking, but we feel it adds to the original character of the car. Similarly, the upholstery to the dash and door cards looks to be in good order, with no major wear or damage we could see.
Throughout the cabin, black carpets adorn the floor, along with complementary floor mats. They appear to be in pretty good order, although in need of a valet. At the front, there is a useful luggage areas – or ‘frunk’ – that is trimmed out in grey carpet. It all seems to be in reasonably good condition, although it does require some reaffixing in a couple of places.
All of the instrumentation and switchgear looks to be original and presents as such, with a welcome and natural level of gentle wear. The gear lever and steering wheel show no abnormal wear, which lends further weight to the car’s low indicated mileage. We’re told by the vendor that everything works just as it should, with no faults or issues reported at all.
The Exterior
- Guards Red (L80K) paintwork
- Cup design door mirrors
- Wider ‘Turbo style’ body
- Original ‘Turbo Twist’ wheels
- Engine lid with auto-extending rear spoiler
Guards Red is a classic Porsche colour for a good reason – it really suits the car. While the paintwork would benefit from a polish, overall it presents in very good condition, with no major marks or blemishes we could identify. paint Protection Film is fitted to the wide rear arches to offer a little extra defence from rogue pebbles too.
As the car has spent its life either in the dry Californian atmosphere or stored indoors, it comes as no surprise to find that the body panels all look to be corrosion free. They also show no evidence of damage or major wear that we could discern. Likewise, the trim, glass elements and badges all look very well, with nothing we saw giving us cause for concern.
The only issues we noted on the body are that the rear passenger side lamp lens is cracked and that there is a little black rubber missing from around the driver’s door handle. Otherwise, the car shows very well and appears to be complete and correct externally.
The wheels are the original Turbo Twist wheels. These handsome 18-inch alloys fill the arches perfectly and present in very fine fettle, with no evidence we saw of kerbing or lacquer peel. They are shod in a matched set of Pirelli P-Zero tyres which appear to have good tread levels.
The Mechanics
- 3.6-litre naturally aspirated, flat-six, air-cooled engine
- Six-speed manual transmission
- All-wheel drive
- Anti-lock braking system
Popping the engine lid, the bay looks to be in excellent condition, with no signs of leaks or other issues. That 3.6-litre flat-six develops a meaty 282hp and 250 lb-ft, driving all four wheels to provide sure-footed, reliable performance.
We love the fact that this is a manual car too – there can be few joys to compare with rifling through the gears of a classic 911 on your favourite bit of road, blipping the throttle to match your revs.
We’re assured by the vendor that the car drives perfectly, with no mechanical issues whatsoever.
Summary
In many eyes, air-cooled 911s are the quintessential sports car. It’s difficult to disagree, and this lovely example should provide many more years of wonderful driving memories. For anyone in the market for a classic 911, this cannot be ignored.
