The Appeal
Throughout its various manifestations over the years, the S-Class has always been Mercedes-Benz’s way of showing off just what they’re capable of and the W140 was, without doubt, one of the most advanced cars in the world in its day.
Equipped with a vast array of optional extras and finished in the pleasing colour scheme of Black Metallic (199U), this 1996 S500 is a fantastic example that has clearly been cherished its whole life.
The History and Paperwork
- Originally supplied to Lueg, Bochum, Germany
- Offered for sale in the Netherlands and we’re informed it retains all of its German paperwork
- Will be supplied with a German TUV
- Original book pack present, including a record of past servicing that bears numerous stamps for the first few years of its life, suggesting much of its mileage was covered in this period
- The digital odometer now reads 165,691 kilometres
The Interior
- Trimmed in Black (251A) leather
- Zebrano woodwork

- The upholstery looks to be in very good order with nothing to report besides the light wear you’d expect to see on a car this age
- Inside the cabin and boot, the carpeting remains very serviceable
- The toolkit and warning triangle can still be found in the boot along with a spare wheel
- The dashboard and interior trim appear in really good order with minimal wear
- The headlining remains really smart and there is an electric sunroof fitted
- Overall, this interior is in fantastic condition considering its age and with all the tech, feels more contemporary than you might expect
The Exterior
- Black Metallic (199U) paintwork
- Besides the odd very small blemish commensurate with age, the paint and bodywork looks to be in really fine order
- We’re informed that the front wings and the boot have been repainted and they match well
- The vendor reports that the paintwork has had a protective ceramic coating applied
- All of the chrome trims, including the grille, appear really smart
- Bootlid type designation de-selected from new, lending it a cleaner look
- We couldn’t see any obvious signs of damage or corrosion and the vendor reports that the bodywork is in very fine shape
- The underside appears very sound indeed
- The alloy wheels are in very fine shape and are shod with Michelin Pilot HX tyres

Summary
Given its fine condition and sheer quantity of onboard tech, It’s hard to believe this S-Class is now 27 years old. If a W140 has always been on your wishlist, this would be a great example to add to your collection.
