The Background

The VW Corrado was Volkswagens compact 2+2 coupe between 1988-1995. It was never that successful at the time with only 97,000 being manufactured during the seven-year production run. That being said Auto Express magazine have mentioned that it is one of VW’s best ever driver’s cars with the VR6 model being a car you need to experience at least once in your life.

The special Corrado VR6 Storms were produced right at the end of the production run in 1995. With only 500 leaving the factory they are now extremely rare.

The History

With only 3 owners within the past 26 years you can see that this Corrado has been in the same ownership for a considerable amount of time. Purchased from new by and author in London it went on to become his wife’s car for the majority of their time with the car. Within the 25 year it looks like the car was used heavily to begin with but as time went on the number of miles the car completed in a year started to drop.

The current owner has had his eye on this car for a long time and was finally able to acquire the car earlier this year. On purchasing the car earlier this year, they have gone through and made sure that it is as good looking and as original as when it left Volkswagen. All of the parts that have been put onto this car have been sourced through either TPS Parts (a specialist in genuine VW group parts) or Heritage Parts Centre (once again a specialist VW group parts).

The list of genuine and original VW parts that have been replaced on this car is extraordinarily long, but the current owner has kept all of the invoices so that the new owner will be able to see what has gone into getting this Corrado back to the condition that it now sits in.

The Paperwork

Having just finished a sympathetic restoration by the current owner the car comes with a mountain of modern paperwork but there are also a few original receipts in the handbook.

Within the bundle of paperwork you will find invoices for original wheel bolts, the only original oil filter in the country (sourced from Macclesfield), original washers, a new genuine front grill and so many other parts. The current owner is also including several VW spare parts and VW fluids that they have sourced throughout this job (these have also been photographed)

There are also a lot of original VW literature that comes within the handbook. Some of these include the original instruction manual, VW on call booklet and the service book. The latter has stamps in it from 1996 all the way up to 2006 where the book runs out of space.

The Interior

From the factory you could only spec. your Corrado VR6 Storm with either a green exterior and cream leather interior or, like this example, a blue example with a black leather interior. With VW only making 500 Storms they split the allocation in half, 250 being green on cream and 250 being blue on black. Which make each individual Storm even rarer depending on the specification.

The interior that you see in this Corrado is totally original, the only small detail that has been replaced is the gear knob. The seats, floor mats, dashboard, headlining, and steering wheel are all original to the car and have never been changed. It is thanks to this level of 90’s originality that this Corrado is possibly the most original version that you will ever see.

The few interior features that denote this as the rarer Storm version are the storm logo on the center console and the original Sony hi-end radio. Both of these features are as original as the rest of the car.

As you can imagine there are a few areas that show wear within the interior, but this is expected with a 120,000 mile, 26-year-old car. The driver seat shows the most wear with a small tear on the side bolster, the headlining is the same one it left the factory with. The sunroof, a feature that is prone to issues, works as well on this example, working silently with no signs of leakage.

The Exterior

The exterior of this Corrado has recently had a modern re-spray. This brings the Mystic blue paintwork into the 21st century, providing deep reflections and gloss. It is thanks to this respray that this VR6 Storm now looks stunning in all lights.

The car now sits on newly refurbished, factory original, 15” BBS rims. A lovely feature that just add even more originality to this Corrado. Once the wheels were refurbished the current owner was able source original wheel bolts, badges, and caps from Germany. Not only does it sit on these BBS rims, but it has four matching tires, usually a sign that the car has been loved.

One party piece of the Corrados exterior is its active aerodynamic system (a feature you now get on modern high-end sports cars). The rear wing of the Corrado extends at speed to help with the stability of the car. This feature can be known to fail as these cars get old, but like the rest of the car, the rear spoiler works perfectly.

The Mechanics

Looking at the rest of the car you would be correct in thinking that the mechanical elements of this Corrado are all original and in fully working condition. The special and rare 2.9L VR6 fires into life quickly and has a glorious soundtrack. With the added bonus of 188hp under your right foot in quite a light and agile hatchback it flies down the road.

With an acclaimed 0-60 time of 6.7 and top speed of 150 mph it could have easily of rivaled any sports car at the time.  Like the rest of the car the current owner has not skipped on the quality of care devoted to getting this Corrado to the standard it is in today. All of the mechanical parts have been sourced from VW parts specialists and are the original/genuine parts that would’ve been supplied at the time.

A testament to the current owners devotion to originality is the story of having to source the only original oil filter in the country all the way from Macclesfield, even the parts department didn’t know they still had this part in stock. Over the past 26 years there hasn’t been any major mechanical works carried out, this is down to how well it was looked after by the previous owners regardless of cost.

The new owner will benefit from the hours spent by the current owner sourcing genuine VW parts, it would be near on impossible to find another person as devoted as the current owner.

The Appeal

This Corrado VR6 Storm is one rare car, its believed that there are only 17 examples left out of the original 500. You would be hard pressed to find another VR6 Storm, let alone find another VR6 Storm that has been this well looked after in the past few months. With it being so rare and sort after you can imagine that over the next few years the car will appreciate with the new owner being the envy of any car show.

You could say that this is the most original and therefore best example on the worldwide market currently. The next owner of this Corrado VR6 Storm will be purchasing a slice of automotive history, they don’t make them like they used to and this VR6 is a very engaging drive that will reward you with smiles per gallon.
