The Appeal
Spanning three generations the Toyota MR2 is a sporty two-seater that is fun to get behind the wheel of. This example has been professionally modified by MR2 specialists for both track and road use. There are a lot of invoices that document this work over the years so you can go through and plot the modifications as the years go on.
This MR2 is ready to go out of the box and you shouldn’t need to complete any of the expensive work yourself leaving you more time and money to experience the thrills of driving.
The History and Paperwork
- Starting life in Japan in 1994 this MR2 came to the UK in 2004
- It has since experienced 4 previous owners
- The current owner has had the car since 2012
- In their ownership, they have completed several upgrades
- These include a forged engine, Bilstein suspension, and sticky Nankang NS2R tyres
- The modifications amount to thousands of pounds
- An invoice from November 2022 totalled £1713, where the cambelt was changed
- One from January 2019 totalled £2,253
- The most important invoice is for the forged engine bill, this came to £3,578
- You can probably tell that money was no object when it came to building this MR2

- It consists of MOT certificates, invoices, and even its Japanese export document
- There are also instruction manuals for aftermarket parts and two keys
- You can easily spend an afternoon going through all of its paperwork

The Interior
- Fitted with an FIA Recaro Pole position driver’s seat
- This is fitted on adjustable rails
- It is said to hold you very nicely when you’re on a nice B-road or the track
- The passenger’s seat is a Recaro SR trimmed in a confetti pattern
- There is a small area where the fabric is coming away from the plastic just underneath the Recaro logo
- Both seats are very comfortable to sit in
- A removable boss has been fitted to aid getting in and out of the car
- All of the interior buttons/switches are reported to work
- The air-conditioning currently doesn’t blow cold air
- However, both electric windows work as they should allowing for some airflow
- In the ‘frunk,’ you’ll find a battery cut-off switch
- Some aftermarket speakers have been fitted behind the seats
- These are set into wooden surrounds that you may wish to paint to hide them
- All of the original dashboard and centre console are in very good condition
- There are no large cracks in the dashboard
- A few digital displays have been installed beneath the Clarion radio
- These display your volts, water temp, oil temp, and oil pressure
- There is a photo showing these working
- A digital boost gauge has also been installed in place of the rather basic factory original
- Overall, the car is in rather good condition for a car approaching its 30th birthday
The Exterior
- This MR2 looks very purposeful from the exterior
- It has been fitted with a few aftermarket aero parts
- Aeroware front lip
- Rookie Racing side skirts
- MR2 Ben's front wings
- Genuine Toyota 98/99 spec rear wing
- Its front windscreen cowl, window plastics, and wiper arms were replaced with genuine Toyota parts
- Most of these are now no longer available
- The car was resprayed in 2019 where it also had some slight welding completed around the boot floor area
- Since respray the car has been used on the road and track so there are some slight marks present
- There is some cracking to the front lip and small scratches from rubber pickup on track days
- The underside has been treated and had a touch-up late last year
- It currently sits on a set of Wedsport SA90s with Nankang NS2R tyres
- The pop-up headlights were tested and worked perfectly
- Overall, the exterior condition appears to be good
- Thanks to its tasteful aftermarket aero kit it looks very purposeful
The Mechanics
- This is the section where this MR2 will stand out from the crowd
- The current owner has spent thousands on building their perfect MR2
- All of the following work has been carried out by MR2 specialists Drift Limits Performance and Rogue Motorsport
- It has Billstein B6’s all round with H&R springs and TRD top mounts
- TRD anti-roll bars
- TRD engine mounts
- Phoenix Power RCA’s
- Poly bushes
- Willhelm Raceworks BBK on the front with Carbotech XP8 pads
- The BBK kit for the rear is present but will require calipers, discs, and pads buying
- Moving on to the engine
- It has been built with forged parts
- ARC induction box
- ST205 A2W CC
- Blitz K380 turbo
- BRD downpipe – with catalytic converter
- HKS HiPower exhaust
- Extreme twin plate clutch
- JZA80 Supra fuel pump
- External oil cool (this is fitted in place of the standard side-mounted intercooler)
- Mishimoto uprated radiator
- TRD short shifter
- As previously mentioned, the tyres are sticky Nankang NS2Rs
- It has also had a new timing belt recently
- On the day of the photos, the car was driven to and from the location
- During the drive, it performed very well
- The suspension toes a line between comfortable on-road driving and stiffer track settings
- It pulled very well away from junctions
- The current brake set-up is more track-oriented and can be squeaky when cold
- Overall, the mechanical aspects of this MR2 are very good
- You just need to hop in and experience this MR2

Decent MR2s are getting harder to find and are somewhat under-appreciated, these two factors usually go hand-in-hand with a future appreciating classic. This example has been professionally modified by MR2 specialists with genuine, and high-end parts meaning it drives very well out on the road.
