The Background
Back in 1976 Porsche broke their own mould of rear-engined, water-cooled sports cars and released the front-engined, water-cooled sports car that was the 924. Released 20 years after the revolutionary 924 the 968 would be the final evolution of this thinking with quite a short 5-year production run from 1991-95. Where it would be the last front-engined Porsche released until the Cayenne in 2003.
Effectively the 968 was a redesigned version of the 944 with many design links between the two. The front end would largely resemble the top of the line 928 with its pop-up headlights and integrated front bumper and the rear would have a slight re-designed and integrated rear deck.
With production spanning a few years the production numbers are relatively small, the first year was the most successful with 5,300 units being produced but by the end of the run in 1995 on 1,100 had been built. A steep demise in production numbers would lead to the end of the 968 at the end of 1995.

The History
With so few owners during this car's past, it is easy to plot its life on a timeline. Leaving the Porsche production line at the start of 1994 it would be registered on the UK roads on the 1st of March 1994 by Carrs Porsche of Exeter, it would stay in the Exeter area until the service book seems to show it moving to the
Hertfordshire area in the late 1990s where it would stay with that owner receiving the best amount of mechanical care it could have with it always being kept in a garage and only used on dry days. The current owner picked up this exceptional example in 2007 after a painstaking two-year search for the perfect car. The current owner has kept up the same level of mechanical care, much like the previous owner, with Porsche stamps from Howard Watts, their local Porsche specialist.
During the current ownership, this car has been used only on sunny days, usually between April and September, and when it's not been in use it has been housed in a nice warm garage. With thanks to the level of care this car has been received over the past 30ish years, it is no wonder why it sits today in such great condition. With the current owner heavily involved with the paint maintenance it has regularly been clay barred with a coat of wax being applied swiftly after, if you are to run your hand across the paintwork it is as smooth as glass.
This car has received quite a lot of preventative maintenance throughout its life with the timing chain being replaced for peace of mind at 93,000 miles, whilst it was in the garage for the timing chain the clutch and flywheel were also replaced. It is had two previous owners that have cared for this car, the next owner will now benefit from all this care and inherit a car that is in tiptop condition and ready for the summer.

The Paperwork
There is quite a lot of paperwork that will come with this car, the most important feature of this car’s paperwork is the service book. When you open it up and see the multitude of both independent specialist and Porsche stamps you start to build up a picture in your mind of how well it has been looked after throughout its life, all the stamps have been photographed so a prospective buyer can see how many there are.
Along with the service booklet, there are also a few pieces of original Porsche literature stored neatly in a leather pouch and kept in the glove box. Along with the Porsche documents, there is also a multitude of old MOT certificates, invoices that reference the work that has been completed throughout its life and there is also a master key for the immobiliser that is fitted to this car.
The new owner can spend a good few hours perusing the invoices and other assorted pieces of paperwork so that they can start to build up a picture in their mind about just how well this car has been looked after.

The Interior
The interior of this 968 is in immaculate condition, you can see how much the current owner has cared for this car over the past 15 years of their ownership. Unlike its brutish club sport brother, the sport has all the same power but importantly more comfortable seats that lend themselves to long grand tours down to the south of France.
These cloth seats are in perfect condition with no rips, tears, or marks on the material. In many 2+2 sports cars the rear 2 seats are almost unusable for anyone, the seats in the rear of this 968, although it would be a slight squeeze, could still probably just about be big enough to get a small adult in the rear.
The only after-market part that has been fitted to this Porsche are the 968 engraved chrome running strips on the door sills. These not only protect the paint underneath, but they also look great set against the silver paint and black interior.
This car has been looked after properly so it is no surprise that pretty much every element within the interior is in near enough perfect condition. There are even two cigar lighters, a fully working digital clock, and a rear screen heater that works perfectly, a rarity apparently.
Not only are the big elements, such as the seats and headliner, in great condition but smaller sometimes overlooked parts within this interior are in great condition too. The door cards show no damage, the steering wheel shows little sign of any use, and the dials are easily visible behind the dash.
If you open the boot, you will find an immaculately presented cavernous space, with a space-saver hidden under the carpet along with a shiny and full tool kit. You will also find an original tire inflator and a few pairs of gloves that date back to the 1990s.
Overall, the interior of this 968 is in great condition and the next owner will benefit from years of careful preservation. This is probably the best 968 on the market and with an interior like this, it will be a perfect car for any occasion.

The Exterior
Like the interior, the exterior condition is pretty much immaculate. The current owner has regularly gone through a painstaking process of clay barring the paint and topping it off with a coat of high gloss wax. If anyone has taken the time to do this with their own car, they know how long this takes, meaning you need to care for your car to want to undertake such a task.
The big elements like the paint, alloys, and glass are in great condition. There is a lack of curb rash to the alloy wheels and there are also four matching tires another little sign that this car has been owned by an enthusiast who cares about how the care is maintained.
Like the Porsche 928, the 968 is fitted with exposed, pop-up headlights, this party piece still works flawlessly to this day with a swift and silent motion. Along with the super cool pop-up lights, there is also a sunroof that pivots open to allow some more ventilation into the cabin this panel can be removed to create more of a Targa feel to the interior.
With a car like this, it must be seen to be believed, after almost 30 years of careful maintenance to the exterior elements it is no wonder why it now looks this good. There should be no nasty surprises for the new owner where the bodywork is considered. Just simply hop in and look stylish wherever you may go.

The Mechanics
The 968 was towards the end of Porsche's experimentation with front-engined sports cars, fitted with a big 3.0L inline 4 it had oodles of power that was put to the ground through a six-speed gearbox. It would appear that throughout this car’s 30-year life it has been looked after properly, with a multitude of Porsche stamps in the service book the mechanical condition is excellent.
The first real owner of the car would entrust their local specialist to work on the car with all of the invoices from this time coming from Chambers and Gillies of Welwyn. From around 1999- 2007, the previous owner would spend a bit of money keeping the car in tip-top mechanical condition. Some invoices reference some big mechanical works taking place such as the cambelt being changed in 2004 at 76,000 miles, brake discs and pads in 2006, and a service in 2007 just before the current owner picked it up.
When the current owner picked it up in 2007 there would be a bit of work that was carried out to make sure that it was in perfect running order. With the Cam chain being replaced again in 2007 and 90,000 miles, more so for peace of mind rather than it being necessary. The water pump was replaced in 2008 again more for peace of mind instead of it requiring one.
On the day of the photo shoot, the car was required to drive to a location down the road from the current owner’s house. On this drive it performed flawlessly, it started up easily thanks to a new Bosch battery being fitted recently, on the road it soaked up all the bumps with no knocks from the suspension, pulling excellently in all gears. When it came to stopping it performed this task effortlessly with no pulling to the left or right. It was a wonderful and comfortable experience riding in this modern classic.
It is this level of meticulous preventative maintenance that has made sure that this 968 is presented to the market today in such fine fettle. The next owner will be getting a car that is in perfect mechanical condition and ready for everything you may want to throw at it.
