The Appeal
Does any other car have the depth of history, cult following and historical impact of the 911? Certainly, there can’t be many more influential or highly-regarded vehicles. In the eyes of many, the 993 was the last in the line of “genuine” 911s – models that adhered to the original formula. As the last of the air-cooled 911s, it was certainly an era-defining model for the company, combining the traditional mechanical layout with more modern transmissions and braking systems.
Good examples are now very collectible and seen as the perfect balance of modern reliability and performance, with the character and ethos of a classic 911. Eminently usable and practical, they’re the ideal modern classic – and they certainly have retained a healthy following resulting in a buoyant market.
This nicely specified example has clearly been very well cared for, with a comprehensive service record, and is presented in very fine overall condition. As the Carrera 4, it benefits from the additional stability and practicality of Porsche’s all-wheel drive system, as well as the option of ‘wind in the hair’ motoring that the convertible roof provides. For anyone who loves the idea of a classic sportscar but wants the reliability and usability of a more modern machine, the 993 really is the perfect car – and this is a very smart example indeed.

We love the light grey and blue colour combination in the cabin of this 993 – it’s very evocative of the era and suits the car perfectly. The leather and vinyl all looks to be in very good order, with no notable wear or damage other than a small tear in the vinyl near the passenger side door jamb.
The carpets are a complementary light grey with contrasting blue Porsche branded floor mats – again, they present very well with only light wear and no significant wear or threading we could see.
Similarly, the switchgear shows some warm and gentle patina, but there’s nothing missing or damaged that we could identify. Meanwhile the vendor tells us that everything works just as it should, with no faults reported.
At the front, the luggage space is trimmed in neat black carpet and also contains a spacesaver spare wheel, tool roll and compressor.
The Exterior
- Deep blue paintwork
- Factory-fitted alloy wheels
- Dark blue, electrically operated, fabric roof
The paintwork is a truly handsome deep blue, which looks to be in fine overall condition, with no signs of major marks, blemishes or chips that we could identify. The HPI check shows that the car was subject to a colour change in 1996, having previously been silver.
All of the bodywork and trim looks to be in fine fettle as well, the panels are clean and neat, with even gaps and smooth lines. We didn’t see any evidence of corrosion or damage. And all of the glass elements, light lenses and badging look to be well preserved and in good, clean condition. We noted that the rear boot badge is the black anodised ‘Carrera’ badge, not the silver ‘Carrera 4’ badge.
The fabric roof is a matching dark blue and we’re told that the owner has had new Mohair roof material fitted as well as having the electric mechanism refurbished. It shows very well, with no UV fading, tears or damage on display.
From what we could see of the underside, it looks very clean and straight, in fine condition with no damage or corrosion in evidence.
It’s nice to see the car still wearing the correct 17-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels. The silver finish on them looks very smart, and we saw no signs of kerb damage or lacquer peel. They are shod with a matched set of Continental Sport Contact tyres, the rears being recently fitted.
The Mechanics
- 3,596cc naturally aspirated flat-six
- Six-speed manual transmission
- All-wheel drive
- Anti-lock braking system
Charismatic and powerful, it’s little wonder that the air-cooled flat-six 911s remain so popular. We’re informed by the vendor that the engine starts and runs very well, with the car driving just as it should and having no mechanical issues they are aware of.
On top of the fine MOT and service record, during the current owner’s care, the following works have been undertaken by specialists Jaz Porsche:
- New ignition lead set
- Reconditioned power steering wheel rack
- New engine cover struts
- Replaced fan belts
- New steering control arms
- Wheel alignment
Summary
Quite possibly the most complete of all the air-cooled 911s, the 993 really is a superb and very usable modern classic. With its attractive and desirable specification and a great history of maintenance by experts, this lovely example is sure to make its next owner very happy indeed, and will no doubt turn heads wherever it goes…
