Highlights
- A sophisticated big W124 cabriolet with a full and documented service history
- A low mileage example with an average of just under 4K miles per year covered
- Presents very well and is ready for some comfortable summer road-trips
The Background
The W124 (the cabriolet version is officially the A124) was the successor to the very successful W123 model so had big shoes to fill. To ensure this happened Mercedes Benz lavished the W124 with technical innovations of the time.
These included a very aerodynamic shape, partially fared underside to reduce noise and aid airflow, the iconic single, eccentric sweep wiper and an exhaust oxygen sensor for the first time.

The History
This car has enjoyed a series of careful owners who have clearly used the car as a summer second car given that it has covered less than 4K miles per year on average. The car has been fastidiously maintained too. The current owner has collated a log of the MOT’s and services undertaken on the car and they are comprehensive and complete.
The current owner is reluctantly selling the car now as other commitments and lack of recent use means that the car has been under utilised and is ready for a new, enthusiastic owner to take it on.
The Paperwork
The car comes with a great depth of provenance providing paperwork, just a sample of which has been presented in our photographic package.
The archive includes stamped service book, many bills and invoices and numerous, hard copy MOT certificates. There is also the UK V5 in the current owner’s name.

The original dealer book pack is also present in the original wallet including owner’s manual and Mercedes Benz 10/30 audio unit user’s manual.
The Interior
The interior of black leather, contrasting dark wood veneer trim and complimentary dark coloured wool carpets presents very well indeed. The the interior appears to be in very sound, good used condition.
A key benefit of the W124 cabriolet is that it is a true four-seater, and the rear cabin is not only capacious but appears equally good condition as the front cabin.
The well insulated hood operates smoothly via powered articulation and stows completely under a body-coloured panel maintaining an uncluttered look but also promoting airflow and reducing noise. We witnessed its operation during our visit as well as capturing some images of it retracting. The headlining would benefit from a steam clean and there is also an area of wear that can be easily patched by a specialist if required.

The Exterior
The Brilliant Silver Metallic paintwork presents very well. It is in a great used condition with only the odd age-related scratch apparent on close inspection.
The body-coloured bumper covers and “Sacco” side panels (Bruno Sacco was the Mercedes Benz design chief during the 1990’s) are in great condition too with no significant imperfections noted or reported. The car seems to enjoy a deep shine and lustre appropriate to a classic Mercedes Benz.

The five spoke, 17-inch AMG alloy wheels are in a good, used condition exhibiting some minor age-related marks which are only apparent on close inspection. The car benefits from a new set of 225/45ZR17, quality Hankook tyres too.
The exterior presentation of this car is a credit to the enthusiasm of the current owners. Only on very close inspection can the odd, inevitable age-related mark be seen. Please see the photographic package for full details.
The Mechanics
The smooth running M104, 3199cc, straight six petrol engine features double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. This well proven engine, rated at a healthy 217bhp, provides relaxed and quiet cruising but provides significant punch when called upon for overtaking and joining fast A roads and motorways.
The owner reports that the car starts well and idles smoothly. There are no reported oil leaks and oil consumption is well within factory specifications. The car stops well and pulls up in a straight line according to the owner. As you would expect from a lightly used and well-maintained Mercedes Benz, all mechanical systems are understood to be in excellent working order.
The Appeal
This W124 Cabriolet is from the period that exemplifies the engineering prowess that Mercedes Benz’s success has been built on. These cars exude robust longevity but certainly not at the cost of style and panache which they deliver in spades.
This example has, clearly, been lightly used throughout its life and maintained to a very high standard. The car is one of those special vehicles that makes every drive feel like a special occasion thanks to the luxuriously appointed interior, the refined mechanicals and the road presence of this head turning cruiser.
What’s more, the W124 cabriolet enables the owner to share that special occasion feeling with up to three friends in full comfort being a capacious four-seater with a large boot making ideal for extended road-trips and adventures.
