The Appeal
These early Monsters really broke the mould when it came to Ducati motorcycles.
Mostly known for their high-performance sports bikes during the ‘70s & ‘80s, the Monster was a stripped-down sports bike utilising the 888-frame mated to a 900ss engine, with the idea being to create a sporty but more practical motorcycle for everyday riding.

This example comes from the second year of production and has been the subject of a complete rebuild.
These early models are now hard to come by, especially in this condition, and are beginning to see investment growth in the collectors market, but above all else, this bike is for riding .
Flat bars, rear set footrests, great brakes in a very well handling chassis and of course that big V twin engine all combine to make the Monster a fabulous real roads bike to enjoy.
One to take out on a dry summers evening and head for the twisty bits !
History & Paperwork
• V5c in the vendor’s name
• Mot to August ‘22
• Only 3,161 miles covered in the last 16 years
This Monster has been owned by the vendor since 2014 , but spent some time off the road during the restoration which was finished only 3 years ago.
The Exterior
• Frame stripped & professionally painted
• All paintwork & wheels professionally painted
• Engine cases, barrel & head vapour blasted
Looking good after much work has been carried out , with all paintwork in good condition.
Renthal bars have been fitted along with alloy adjustable levers and the vendor has added daytime running lights for a bit of extra security on todays busy roads.
Silencers are thought to be cut down originals & the vendor tells us they make a great sound !
Overall, there is a little room for improvement with some small detailing, but this Monster is for riding !
Mechanics
The vendor tells us that the Ducati was completely stripped to a bare frame before reassembly. New bearings were fitted to the headstock and swinging arm, new bushes & seals were fitted to the forks.
Chain and sprockets were replaced and new Bridgestone Battlax BT21 tyres were fitted.
The vendor tells us that engine was stripped for vapour blasting & then rebuilt with new big end shells although all looked in tip top condition, but whilst apart it’s good practice to replace at the time.
New gearbox layshaft bearings were also fitted and the engine was reassembled using new cam belts. All work being carried out by the vendor, an engineer who specialises in building performance motorcycle engines.
The Ducati sports an aftermarket clutch slave cylinder, replacing the troublesome original.
Summary
Well, it’s a Ducati and a nice one at that.
The owner informs us that it rides very well, the performance is certainly impressive and that it makes a fabulous all-rounder.
New paint & mechanical work will pay dividends helping to future proof your investment, but the most important point is that it’s ready to go for the summer and to enjoy to the full.
Well worth a punt for this piece of Italian mastery .
