The Background
The Mercedes SL500 is one of their longest produced models with production (including facelifts) ranging from 1954 to present day across 7 generations of the model. This gives you some idea just how popular they were, still are and it’s not hard to see why.
Decent build quality, classy understated looks and in this form a throbbing great V8 under the bonnet which is in turn transformed into power under your right foot.
Overall the SL is a class act.
The History
The current owner acquired the vehicle around 13 years ago and it has been used as a weekend toy since along with another weekend car.
It has been dry stored when not in use and any maintenance taken care of.
Unfortunately now due health reasons its not a practical car to get in an out of being allow sports car so the owner has decided it needs to find a new home.
The Paperwork
The car comes with the V5 Logbook and a wealth of receipts for works undertaken. It also has a stack of old MOTs and original manuals.
The car has a fresh 12 month MOT with no advisories.
The Interior
The interior of the SL500 is cream and it goes well with the mauve of the outside of the vehicle.
Whilst the interior is all complete it is in used condition and would benefit from a detail.
There is an aftermarket stereo fitted as the car came with a tape deck and the current owner wanted to be able to play CDs.
There is a warning light on the dash which is related to the seat belt warning system, all the seat belts work and the light has been on since he purchased it so the current owner has not investigated further.
The centre console/armrest lid has detached and is loose.
The Exterior
The two tone paintwork on the SL is in good condition with minor blemishes visible as pictured. The cloth convertible roof is also in good condition with no rips.
The wheels are straight and true with good tyres however there are some small areas of corrosion present on the wheels.
The car also comes with a colour coded removable hard top, which has damaged rear glass but the seller has stated this will be replaced before sale.
The Mechanics
The car has not been used as a daily commuter hence the relatively low miles, lets not forget this car is nearly 30 years old and the mileage for the big 5 litre V8 is barely run in.
The car has been maintained and serviced regardless of miles covered and it drives well and sounds just as good with that lovely V8 burble coming from the tailpipes.
The car changes up and down without fault and is a beautiful car to cruise in.
The Appeal
1990s SL500 is a well sorted vehicle. It is new enough to have all the creature comforts one could want and also matching reliability.
The style of the 90s SL500 have aged well and even some 30 years on this is still a great looking car.
Whilst this particularly example may not be of concourse level finish, it only needs a small bit of TLC to bring its back to its best and its certainly been used and enjoyed not tucked up in a bubble.
If your after a 90s sports car with class, power and looks that will turn heads, you'd better check this one out!
