1992 Mercedes-Benz 300TE24 S124

Highlights

  • Good condition
  • Well maintained
  • 7 seats

The Appeal

The practical estate variant of Mercedes’ W124, strictly the S124, has been a dependable workhorse for many families the world over.

Now a desirable classic in its own right, its usability is only enhanced by the option of a 7 seat configuration which has been retrofitted to this example.
Good examples of the S124 are widely coveted and this one is a reluctant sale by an owner who has lost access to his storage space.

With a huge history file showing regular servicing and money spent whenever it’s been needed, it has the potential to be put into daily service again or cherished as a modern classic.

Whichever you have in mind, get your bid in now.

The History and Paperwork

  • Originally purchased by a British engineer who used the car in Germany and the UK
  • In 1996 he relocated to Switzerland and the car was stored in a heated garage for the next ten years
  • Returning to the UK, after spending some time in storage it was daily driven by the owner’s nephew until it was sold in June 2018
  • New exhaust fitted 2016
  • Acquired by the previous owner, a Mercedes club member, in August 2018 who spent £4,900 on a range of items including cylinder head gasket replacement, a retrofit of rear seats in boot, amongst many others
  • Further maintenance included four new tyres March 2019, new brake pipes and hoses, discs and pads in June 2020
  • Bought by the current owner in October 2020
  • Work carried out in current ownership includes fixing corrosion to the offside front wing and a scrape on the front passenger door, fitting a new retro style radio with Bluetooth and CD
  • Only selling due to loss of storage space
  • Service history 1992-2006 has sadly gone astray, though MOTs support the mileage being genuine
  • Full service history with invoices showing services every year since 2006 apart from 2012 when the car was subject to a SORN
  • Original owner’s manuals and 2 keys
  • Last serviced August 2021
  • MOT with no advisories valid to 1 June 2022
  • V5 present in owner’s name

The Interior

  • Very original
  • Great condition
  • Rear facing seats in the boot
  • Subtly upgraded radio
One of the stand out features of the estate version of the W124 was the 7 seat configuration, with an additional pair of rear facing seats in the boot.

This was an optional extra not specified on this car originally but subsequently retro fitted for maximum practicality.
The interior is upholstered in ‘sports grey’ cloth and is extremely well preserved. It’s all original too, save for the addition of a retro looking CD player with hands free Bluetooth calling and new speakers.

All of the other dials, buttons and switches work too, including the air conditioning and electric sunroof.
In the boot there’s a brand new spare tyre with a Mercedes petrol can neatly stowed inside it and the original warning triangle and jack.

However, the original first aid kit had gone missing and has been replaced with a new one which at least means that the bandages should still be in date.

The Exterior

  • Smoke silver coachwork
  • Presents generally well
  • Continental All Seasons tyres
  • Roof bars also included
There’s a classless elegance to the S124 which is part of its appeal as a family motor and Smoke Grey suits the car well.

The paintwork is in good condition with no obvious bubbling and the history showing that bodywork corrosion has been dealt with when it has appeared.

Indeed, the offside front wing is a slightly darker hue than the rest of the body as a consequence of one such example of remedial work.
The wheels show a little light kerbing and are shod with a matching set of Continental All Seasons tyres, all with a good amount of tread remaining.

Underneath, there is a little surface corrosion as you would expect but again no visible damage or corrosion.

Overall, it’s no show queen but is in perfectly usable condition.

The Mechanics

  • 3 litre 24 valve straight six petrol engine
  • Automatic gearbox, not currently engaging fifth gear
  • Otherwise drives very well
  • Some spares included
The engine reportedly starts first time, every time and is very quiet at idle. The seller tells us that the car drives very well, accelerating strongly and with strong brakes.

While it changes gear smoothly, there is an issue with the gearbox in economy mode which fails to engage fifth gear.

It’s believed to be a straightforward fix but it has been difficult to secure time with the seller’s local specialist and so remains outstanding.

The seller reassures us that the car drives perfectly well in standard mode and that the kickdown is effective so it should just be a case of getting time with someone who knows these cars.
In addition, there is a small selection of spare parts with the car, including various service items such as an air filter, oil filter etc and some replacement parts such as lights etc.

Summary

A nice example of the Mercedes family workhorse that should provide dependable service for many more years in the hands of a sympathetic new owner.
