THE APPEAL
Mercedes-Benz vehicles of this age were designed by engineers with a no-holds barred approach and a “money no object” attitude and this shows in both the interior and exterior of the vehicle.
This 300CE coupé model was part of the first generation of the Benz family to be designated as E-Class, the 124 series coupés were produced with exceptional quality and in low numbers, making them the ideal collectible classics.
Of the almost 2.6 million 124 series vehicles produced, just 141,498 were coupes – and only 43,486 were 300CE vehicles. In other words, the 300CE represents less than 2% of all 124 series vehicles produced.
Stylistically the Coupés of the 124 E Class are like the Saloon, presenting themselves with the same composed, clear lines for which chief designer Bruno Sacco was responsible.
Coupés are a little shorter than saloons with their windscreen and rear window having a flatter angle. The extra reinforcement for safety adds weight comparable to the saloons.

THE INTERIOR
• Rear headrests
• Electric sliding roof
• Orion grey leather interior
• Front and rear folding armrests
• All original inside with everything working
• Electric pre tension seat belts that move out to greet you as you sit down
• Original first aid kit in the rear parcel shelf
A lot of thought went into both the ergonomic layout and material quality of this range of Mercedes and it has aged beautifully.
There is a feeling of quality, refinement, and openness inside the cabin, accentuated by the pillarless design. This 300CE interior is well presented and shows very little signs of wear with just a small cracking to the armrest piping.
Dials and switches are laid out in a user friendly and practical way and have a tactile feel. All the electrics work, the windows and sunroof both open and close quickly. There is an aftermarket radio in place.
The boot area is clean and includes a full-sized spare wheel, warning triangle and original jacking equipment.
THE EXTERIOR
• Stylish single windscreen wiper
• Original metallic grey/black paintwork
• Original and correct eight-hole alloy wheels
• Headlight washer/wipers including heated nozzles and hoses
This 300CE has a sleek exterior which is accentuated when the windows are retracted to highlight the pillarless design.
The passive safety is characterised by an elaborate body shell structure which provides crumple zones as in a modern vehicle giving excellent ratings for stability and stiffness despite the lack of B-pillars.
The metallic paintwork is in good condition with just a few marks and the wheels are in fair condition with a few areas of pitting. There are a few areas on the wings that will need a bit of attention where the paint has come away leaving the metal open to the elements.
No areas have been hidden or covered over and the car retains its originality.
THE MECHANICALS
• Anti-lock braking system ABS
• Rigid chassis and crumple zones
• Multi-link axle, now standard on most modern cars
• Impact -absorbing reinforced interior that became the base for Euro-NCAP
Under the bonnet is the Mercedes 3.0-litre naturally aspirated straight-six engine that produces 217bhp and drives the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission.
Coupés have the multi-link independent rear suspension of the four-door cars and their shock absorber strut independent front suspension located by individual wishbones.
The braking system also originated unchanged from the saloons. Features like this ensure the high safety for which Mercedes-Benz stands for. There are no signs of welding under the vehicle and it was undersealed.
