Camper conversion on VW’s classic big van platform
Wood-lined cabin
Large double bed, sink, fridge, hob, grill and leisure battery
Solid and sturdy, ready for adventure
THE APPEAL
Camper vans are staples of the Volkswagen scene, but very few of them have as much space as this one. If you want to go large, then this is the super-size alternative to a Type 2.
Based on a 1990 LT, the first full-size 3.5-tonner offered by Volkswagen and a critical part of the company’s growth through the 1970s and 1980s, H207 UGP spent the first 15 years of its life in service as a panel van, with MOT records showing it being taken off the road in 2005. It was rediscovered by the last owner 15 years later, recommissioned and converted into a camper using mostly recycled or repurposed materials, before returning to the road.
The vendors bought the van 18 months ago and spent a large amount of last year travelling around England and Scotland in it, but a career change and imminent house move mean they won’t have the same opportunity to go exploring this summer, so it’s time for someone else to go adventuring in it.

SUMMARY
There are multiple ways to look at this van’s appeal. First, it’s a brilliant thing for those who love to travel – a spacious, well-kitted-out and comfortable place to sleep when exploring some of the most exciting and remote places that the UK, Europe (and maybe beyond) have to offer. It’s rugged and mechanically simple, meaning that wherever you venture, it’ll be simplicity itself to keep on (or off) the beaten track.
Then there’s its appeal as a classic – LT35s are rare in the first instance, and a low mileage and tidy example such as this is a rare sight on the roads these days. It’s a quirky and unusual classic commercial that’s in remarkably sound order for a 33-year-old van.
And then there’s the VW scene – a part of the classic car world with a lively and vibrant social life all of its own, and one where this van will be instantly and warmly welcomed.
