1990 Toyota Land Cruiser VX Auto

Highlights

  • Very original example
  • Fantastic overall condition
  • Low owner’s and low miles

The Appeal

The J80 Land Cruiser went on sale early 1990 and sales reached over 2 million units as was their level of popularity.

The J80 was blessed with a new generation of diesel engine with a single overhead cam direct injection inline 6 giving around 164 BHP with an all important 266 lb ft torque.
This car has had one owner from new in 1990/91 and now resides with the current owner. The previous owner clearly took care of the Land Cruiser as is shown by its fantastic condition.

It has been looked after by the mechanic of a haulage company run by the previous/first owner and has been treated to regular maintenance and care over its limited miles.

This is a great opportunity to grab an example of one of the last generations of Land Cruiser that had interesting and different styling before the J100 went a bit mainstream.

The History and Paperwork

  • Previous MOT certificates
  • Registration form
  • Owner’s manuals in great original condition
The car doesn’t come with stacks and stacks of paperwork but has low owners and low miles so has likely avoided much of the hardship of other higher mileage and higher owner vehicles.

The car does come with the original owners’ manuals however as well as the V5C and the vehicle registration document from 1991.

The Interior

  • Interior trim and upholstery in fantastic condition
  • Seat bolsters in good condition also
  • No obvious rips, tears, cracks or fading of any trim or upholstery
The interior of the Land Cruiser is remarkable condition for its age with no obvious rips, tears, discoloration or sagging of any upholstery.

The plastics around the interior from what we can see are free from cracks, or any excessive wear and tear. The higher traffic areas of the interior such as the handbrake and the gear knob have some more wear but nothing to suspect 30 years of use and abuse, the steering wheel for example is very nice, with little wear around the stitching.

All the switchgear presents very well, and all systems are reported to be working, one or two of the buttons/switches have started to see the labelling fading but it’s still clear to see what each one does.

The seats look to be in great condition with the cloth fabric not having any thin areas and the bolsters being taught and holding their shape.

It’s clear to see that this car has been well looked after and loved by its previous keeper and now presents in a fantastic original condition.

The Exterior

  • Oozing 90’s styling
  • Remarkably straight and clean bodywork
  • Tough and ready to tackle any terrain
The outside of the Land Cruiser is remarkably clean and straight with very few if any dents, scratches or scuffs around the entirety which for a car designed to conquer the toughest terrain is indicative of how well this car has been taken care of.

There are some minor areas to note, such as just underneath the driver’s headlight where a small amount of corrosion looks to have been treated and made to look presentable.

There are some similar sections just underneath the rear window on the boot lid but again it looks to have been treated and made to look presentable.

The driver’s side headlight cover also looks to have a crack which we can’t imagine would be difficult to source and replace. The sunroof and surrounding metal work however looks to be in fantastic condition with no obvious corrosion showing through.

The wheels are in good condition with some minor paint peeling but nothing to detract from the overall look, the tyres however look to be in fantastic condition and have plenty of tread on them to get you out of trouble should you venture off road.

The Mechanics

  • Timing belt replaced at 52,960 miles
  • Full service including oil, fuel and air filter, new brake discs/pads and callipers
  • All servicing carried out by company mechanic
The Land Cruiser has only had one owner from new, with that owner running a haulage firm.

As a result, the company employed a mechanic to care for the trucks the company ran and the Land Cruiser was afforded the same treatment. This has resulted in only 1 or 2 stamps in the service book, but the car has been taken care of as one of the company’s own.
As mentioned, when the current owner took the car on, they had the car put through a thorough service and recommission just in case with the timing belt being replaced, the brakes all replaced and all the fluids and filters replaced just to ensure the car was in as good health as possible.

Further to this info about how the car has been taken care of, visually the engine and the bay is in fantastic condition.

From what we can see, there is no evidence of fluid leaks, cracked pipes, exposed wires or broken components, the metal work in the bay looks to be in great condition with little to no corrosion from what’s on show.

The engine and drivetrain are also reportedly in fine working order and the turbo diesel engine is expected to be a reliable and hardworking unit that you can rely on to work in a range of conditions.

Summary

This is a fantastic looking vehicle with remarkably low owners and miles that has survived its 30 years on the road in superb condition.

Couple to that the curvy, cool 90’s styling which has aged very well and this Land Cruiser represents a fantastic opportunity to own something pretty special.
