The Appeal

The Porsche 944 was originally launched to complement the Porsche 924’s potential, the chassis proved capable of handling the increased power and, combined with the car's near-perfect weight distribution, proved deserving of the brand's reputation for great handling and sparkling performance.
The S2 variant of the Porsche 944 arrived late in the model's timeline, as the final evolution of the 944 was heralded by the use of the punchy 3-litre 16V engine, mechanical refinements including stronger brakes and an enhanced exterior design. The 944 S2 offers the best performance outside of the Turbo models and actually considered by many as more drivable in the real world.
This 1990 example is a well-kept show-stopper with a number of not-so-subtle visual upgrades that really set it apart. Fitted with a wide-body GT2 style body kit, uprated suspension and a bespoke stainless steel four-pipe exhaust system, this is not a car for those who want to sneak into and out of a party quietly.

The History and Paperwork

 • MOT to May 2023
 • Dry stored
The owner has a formidable collection of cars, and when he saw this Porsche earlier this year, he was swayed by the one-of-a-kind potential it afforded. While any meaningful information about the history of the car was not on hand, the German sourced racing-inspired GT2 body kit is said to have cost in the region of £5,000, with the adjustable suspension and dampers with parts from Finnish specialists, 9products.

The car has also been fitted with a high-quality custom made stainless steel 4 pipe exhaust system. It is being placed for sale, as the owner has stated it doesn’t really fit in his collection, despite its all round practicality. The car comes with a year's MOT and its V5 is registered under the current owner's name.

The Interior

 • Original leather interior
 • front and rear leather sports seats
 • Bluetooth/MP3 player
The cabin is clean and damp free, with the original fittings in decent shape. The leather seats have generally worn well, with no significant signs of damage other than the piping on the driver's seat and a little wear on the seat bolsters. The rear seat is in good shape.

There are no issues noted on the carpets, all were dry with just a little loose fit noted on the door wells. The boot shows no signs of heavy use. The luggage-compartment blind is intact and pulls neatly across without sagging.
The dashboard and centre console are in good shape, with facia and padding showing very little in terms of cracks or wear damage, just the odd mark noted on some edges. The controls and switches are good, all are said to be operational including the retractable headlamps which were tested to demonstrate no straining or delay.

The car has been fitted with an aftermarket Sony Bluetooth MP3/CD player. The odometer reading appears to have not worked for several years, but otherwise, all dials are said to be operational. The leather steering wheel and gear stick are in good condition, with no damage other than a little age-related wear. The door cards and headlining are in good shape, with no damage or major scuffs.

The Exterior

 • GT2 style wide body kit
 • Split rim alloy wheels
 • Well presented
The Porsche has recently passed an MOT, and the owner stated that the testers were impressed with how solid the car is, especially in terms of its structure. The chassis rails, while partly obscured by the deep front air dam, appear to be solid. The inner wings, engine bay and strut tops are good. The sills and wheel arches are covered with the side fairing but are said to be in good shape too.

The outside panels are well-placed and have a consistent panel fit, the galvanised body shows no indications of significant damage, and the sunroof aperture does not appear to be leaking water - the car has been kept in a garage for the duration of the owner's ownership.  The original panels have even gaps throughout, with no issues with the opening and closing of the doors, although the bonnet struts struggle to hold the weight.

The distinctive wide body kit has been well mounted onto the body, with no suggestions of significant damage observed, with just a slight amount of wear noted on the lowest section of the front splitter.
The body trim and rear spoiler are in good shape, with a little missing paint noted on the rear hatch trim. There are no cracks or scrapes observed on the level sitting bumpers, with their plastic trim free of any significant blemishes. The body paint finish retains a decent lustre, with an even consistent finish and a deep shine.

The body kit paint colour match varies slightly from the body hue with a little matting noted in places but overall doesn’t distract from the overall impact of the car. There are no significant scratches or chips noted on the paintwork, other than the lightest of age-related scuffs on the front of the car.
The glass has been treated to a tint but appears to be in good shape throughout, with no cracks or chips. The seals and door rubbers are decent. The front headlamps lenses have been painted yellow and all of the other lights and lenses fit for purpose.

The split rim alloy wheels have age-related wear but are free from significant rim damage. The car is set up with a complete set of Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, all are less than three years old and display above the legal tread.

The Mechanics

 • Custom Stainless steel four-pipe exhaust
 • Adjustable suspension and dampers
 • Proven to be reliable
The owner has driven the car on a regular basis, including a recent road trip to London and back, during which he stated that the car performed flawlessly in both motorway and heavy traffic conditions.

The all-aluminium, 16V 3.0-litre, four-cylinder engine shows typical signs of its age, but more importantly, the hoses, ancillaries and wiring are in good order. The exhaust system is another highlight of the cars presentation, producing a purposeful hum, it is well fitted with no signs of leaks.
The car started up without hesitation, with the engine idling without any drama - no rumbling or excess smoke was observed while the car was on tick-over.

While the car was running there was no evidence of fluid leaks, any damp patches noted in the photos are the result of a recent wash. The gearbox is said to be whine free and offers a slick change, with no reported juddering with the clutch.
The dashboard lights remained off as the engine ran. The owner has not reported any issues with engine temperature or oil pressure issues, reading around 2.5 bar on the day as the car was running.

The owner has stated that the uprated suspension is typically firm but fit for purpose and holds the road well and complements the 944’s already keen roadholding abilities. The owner has also stated that are no reported issues with the brakes or steering.

Summary

The Porsche name alone is a testament to the brand's unmistakable quality and driving experience. There's no denying the car's structural rigidity, which comes with a well-kept interior and excellent bodywork presentation.

There's also the added bonus that this car has seen regular workouts, which is beneficial to any 944’s prospects. There are not many cars that offer such an exuberant statement, it is a sound base to perhaps create a track day car, or to simply place your cards on the table and announce yourself as a player!
