- Unmolested and unmodified - a rare find
The Appeal
Hot hatches are always a favourite amongst car enthusiasts. Small, light and nimble with engaging steering and a fun driving experience but with enough room to carry your mates and a weekly shop, they blend practicality and performance into one does-it-all package, and enjoy a cult-like following across the board, and the argument of French vs German hot hatches is a discussion almost as old as the combustion engine itself…
For the former of those two continental powers, the Peugeot 205 GTI is arguably a high point. With its characteristically 80s squared-off design, lightweight construction and rev-happy four-cylinder engine that goads you towards the redline, B-Roads had never been so fun, and the 205 GTI was a hit upon its release, enjoying popularity in both 1.6 and, latterly, 1.9-litre form.
This particular example is a true collectors piece, having been evidently cherished, fettled and prized throughout its lifetime, with a low indicated mileage and remaining in outstanding condition throughout.
Go on, you know you want to relieve your childhood dreams or teenage tearaway years… keep reading to find out more.
History/Paperwork
- V5 registered keepers document, showing 4 former keepers. The current owner has not registered the car in his name as the V5 is ‘in the trade’
- Original handbooks and manuals present
- A handful of recent invoices and receipts are present - mostly from the former owner and the owner before him - showing expenditure for items such as a new thermostat kit and driveshafts (04/16) replacement front-rear brake pipes and OSR pipes (01/16) new starter (2016) and various other works such as gearbox oil, routine servicing and more
- In recent years, the car has benefitted from a new set of front discs and pads and 2x new calipers, both in 2022
- Owned by the seller for only a short period of time, the car has been dry-stored as part of a collection, with the only work carried out being a full engine bay detailing to bring it in-line with the rest of the car’s condition
The Interior
- Fantastic condition throughout, having evidently been loved and cherished throughout its lifetime
- Iconic red carpets in fantastic shape with only light wear
- Some (very) minor patina is visible on the door pulls, steering wheel, shifter cap and other high-traffic areas, but this is in-line with the rest of the car’s presentation
- Up above, the sunroof is believed to have been an OE Peugeot, professionally-fitted dealer item, which is arguably more desirable than the vacuum-sealed sliding item which has a reputation for leaking
- The seats show only some light signs of life on the outer bolsters up front, whilst in the rear they show even less signs of use
- In the rear, the load bay presents well, and the parcel shelf is mercifully free of any 6x9 speaker holes
- There are no warning lights on the dashboard, and the seller reports no known faults with any of the electrical systems within the car
The Exterior
- Outstanding condition overall
- The paintwork is in great shape, showing only the lightest of blemishes (such as stone chips) to the front end, which are all-but-hidden thanks to the silver colour of the body.
- There is a larger chip visible on the NSR corner of the boot
- The GTI bumper trim inserts were replaced in May 2022
- There are some signs of light contact on both the front and rear bumper plastic trims (such as small indentations) and on both mirror caps, along with the plastic boot spoiler
- It is noted that the NSF window bears a different registration etching to the other glass, suggesting it has been replaced at some point in the car’s life
- Being super picky, there are some holes visible on the number plate plinth behind the registration plate
- All four wheels are in great condition
The Mechanicals
- Free-revving 1.6-litre engine in excellent health
- The engine bay, block and ancillaries present wonderfully on account of the recent detailing work mentioned above
- The car starts, runs and drives well, though it would likely benefit from a tune-up and more regular use as the idle is a little erratic from cold
- Underneath, the chassis looks to be in good condition, and we’ve included a number of underside photographs for you to assess in the gallery below.
Summary
A true hot-hatch icon and preserved in near-pristine condition, this is a truly wonderful example of the venerable 205 GTI. With low recorded mileage, numerous MoT certificates to ratify the indicated odometer reading and only 5 registered keepers, this is an opportunity not to be missed by anyone looking to add a true gem of a 205 GTI to their collection.
Go on, you’ve always wanted one…
