The Background
The second incarnation of the Silver Spirit was a refinement of the already popular original model, introduced at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show. The biggest change on the MKII was a suspension design change with "Automatic Ride Control" introduced, this is a fully automatic system that adjusted dampers at all four wheels in real time making the ride incredibly smooth. Other updates at that time included the adoption of ABS and fuel injection as standard for all models and markets.
Originally retaining the three-speed Turbo Hydramatic GM400 transmission from earlier Spirits/Spurs, the size of the petrol tank was also increased, up to 107 L (24 imp gal) the car's range was now up to well over 500 km (311 mi).
Exterior and interior changes were minimal, with a considerably smaller steering wheel and two additional ventilation outlets added to the fascia mildly modernising the look up front in the cabin.
The History
The current owner purchased the car from a Rolls Royce specialist in London 5 years ago and it has been kept to a very high standard since always garaged. Any maintenance needed has been carried out in his ownership by Rolls Royce Specialists.
The car has very low mileage and little miles have been covered in the current owners possession with special trips like attending events at Goodwood being a typical day out.
The Paperwork
The car comes with a vast amount of paperwork for every single item that has ever needed any attention and all of its owners have kept a comprehensive history. There are lots of receipts from Rolls Royce dealerships and specialists around the country for any work that has been undertaken. The car is MOT’d until 2021.
The Interior
The interior on this Silver Spirit is absolutely stunning and is such a plush luxurious place to be as to be expected with a Rolls Royce. The Incredibly Soft cream colour leather seats with blue piping , blue carpets with extremely thick plush floor mats and wood veneer are all in fantastic condition as you can see from the photos. There is a small amount of discolouration on the blue dash in front of the driver.
The front seats have electric adjustment and everything inside the vehicle works.
It really is a pleasure to be in and it feels incredibly quiet and refined just like a Rolls Royce should.
The Exterior
The outside of the vehicle is in stunning condition and has a magnificent presence on the road. The silver lady emblem atop the radiator retains that signature Rolls Royce elegance and will be the first thing others see when this rather long luxury motor cruises past.
The paint is in lovely condition and the brightwork is also very well kept. Down the sides of the vehicle are very straight with little to no car park dings whatsoever and the vehicle has no history of being in any accident, so it is believed to be all original paint.
There are a few small blemishes inside the rear of the driver’s side rear arch but other than that she is very clean indeed, especially for a 31 year.
The Mechanics
As already mentioned the vehicle is in great condition and this is also true of all mechanical items. The power steering is a must in a vehicle of this dimensions. The owner states that the engine has been replaced with a new unit at some point around 2012 during the previous ownership though there doesn’t seem to be any paperwork present in the vast stack of accompanying documents to back this up.
The 6.75 L Rolls-Royce L410I V8 is smooth and has a fantastically understated burble to it, the automatic gearbox is smooth and transitions nicely with no untoward noises.
The Appeal
What you are looking at here isn’t merely a car to get from A to B, driving something like this is an event, it’s an occasion to even be in it. If you’re planning to own a car like this you must expect innocent bystanders to almost give themselves whiplash as they turn to see you waft past in this cathedral sized automobile. Its luxurious beyond belief and the elegance and refinement one can expect from a Rolls Royce is nearly unparalleled in the automotive world. It is a large vehicle with a very large but silky smooth engine so if your chasing something which will deliver high MPGs for your daily commute this isn’t the one for you, but that’s not the point of this car.
If you’re after a vehicle that will make you feel rather imperious when behind the wheel, much like Royalty every time you take the family for a Sunday drive then you can’t get much more of a sense of occasion than a classic Rolls Royce like this lovely example. Some say that when Rolls Royce was purchased by BMW the cars lost a little of the hand built character and workmanship that the brand had been famous for and with this being a model from before that takeover this vehicle has character in abundance, you can really feel it when your in and around it.
