- Fully stamped service book
- Fantastic colour scheme
- Last owner since 1991
THE APPEAL
Wonderfully styled and exquisitely engineered, the Mercedes-Benz R107 SL represents the German company’s high watermark in touring sports cars. It harks from an era when the brand’s cars were massively over-engineered and restrained in their elegance, regarded as some of – if not the very – finest cars in the world.
R107s have survived in decent numbers thanks to their mechanical longevity, superb build quality and substantial appeal. This one is arguably the best of the bunch, as it’s the economical six-cylinder model powered by Mercedes’s indestructible M198 engine, from late on in the production run when the R107 was as good as it could get. It’s an absolute stunner, with less than 38,000 miles on the clock.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Previous owner since July 1991
- UK V5C
- MOT June 2022
- Used sparingly by the previous owner
- No MOT advisories since 2006
- Used car bill of sale from Mercedes dealer in 1991
THE INTERIOR
- Black leather upholstery
- Crack-free dashboard
- Original first aid kit
- Roof tool present
- Wood veneers
- Cruise control
The interior is in great order, helped no doubt by the fact that the car has been garaged for most of its life.
As a result, there are none of the usual cracks on the dashboard nor any fading to the veneers or warped door cards. It’s in fine order. It’s also the 2+2 model, though the rear seat really is only suitable for the smallest of passengers. The seats are trimmed in immaculate black leather, which shows minimal signs of age. This is a lovely car inside as well as out.
THE EXTERIOR
- Rare Pearl Grey metallic
- Soft-top in good order
- Factory hardtop
- Original alloys with good tyres
Finished in Pearl Grey – one of the smartest yet also rarest colours for an R107, the Benz is in fabulous condition.
The soft-top roof is also in great condition and goes up and down as it should, with one tiny split in the fabric. The factory hardtop is in good, rot-free condition.
THE MECHANICS
- 3.0-litre straight-six
- Four-speed auto transmission
- Well-maintained
- Drives faultlessly
- Has covered less than 2,000 miles in last 15 years
- Used sparingly by the previous owner
The car starts and drives with no obvious faults being evident but the vendor strongly recommends a good check-over before any regular driving as the car has seen very little use in recent years.
SUMMARY
This is an amazing low-mileage R107 that has led a pampered life, with a history of careful maintenance and only two owners, the last for 31 years. It’s a stylish, elegant and usable car in absolutely wonderful condition.
