THE APPEAL
One of the rarest and most lusted-for cars ever to have been produced, the Ferrari 250GTO is something most of us could only ever dream of owning. It's an incredibly unique vehicle that only the ultra-wealthy can afford and although many declare you cannot put a price on any one of the 36 produced, the last one fetched the exorbitant amount of seventy million dollars and became the world's most expensive car sold at auction.
Built to be a GT racer and compete against the likes of the Jaguar E-Type and Shelby Cobra, the 250 GTO dominated the vehicle's class, winning championships in 1962, 1963 and 1964 and making its mark in history. Soon after, its value and collectability started to grow, with many considering the car to be the very embodiment of Ferrari and the perfect representation of the brand's racing DNA. The spectacular cars are now unfortunately out of reach for anyone other than billionaire tycoons, their beauty kept inside grand private showrooms, only to be enjoyed as artwork and a portrayal of wealth.
A gentleman by the name of Roy Kelly however decided the beauty of the 250 GTO should be accessible and enjoyed by the more average individual and as such replicated the car's spectacular design to be used on either the Porsche 922 or 944, utilising both frame and running gear. This is a 1989 Porsche 944 S2, with its body replaced by Ron Kelly's fibreglass 250 GTO panels. The result is an eye-drawing, gorgeous kit car with a fantastic soundtrack that pays homage to the magnificent Ferrari.

THE INTERIOR
- Black leather seats
- Red leather & carpet trim
- Signs of wear present
The 250 GTO was a GT racer and therefore the originals were not built with sophistication and comfort in mind, it was more a simple, practical approach to ensure ultimate performance. Some details have made their way into this replica however, a wooden 3-spoke steering wheel with yellow Ferrari badge, aluminium gear selector and surround. The instrument panel is also of an aluminium style, with black gauges with white detailing covering oil temperature, pressure, water, fuel and rev counter. The speedometer is located in the centre, in front of the gear stick and below additional toggle switches. The seats are trimmed in black leather and dark blue fabric and do feature a few areas of wear, the rears are experiencing some attrition and could do with some attention. Photographs have been provided for these areas.
THE EXTERIOR
- Spectacular looking classic
- Classic Ferrari Rosso Corsa Red
- Signs of wear present on fibreglass & paint
- Wire wheels in great condition
The draw of a 250GT is unmistakable and this replica captures those unique characteristics fantastically. It sits poised, eager to slide round track corners and past the competition. The general condition is good but there are a few blemishes on the car that have been photographed, the most noticeable is a surface crack to the front of the vehicle. There are a few tiny hairline cracks around the windows, a small indentation present by the right door and the paint on the bonnet could do with a polish or respray. Overall, a very attractive car in good condition.
THE MECHANICS
- Porsche 944 S2 running gear
- 3L inline-4
- Immobiliser
- Fantastic sound
During our visit, the car was manoeuvred a few miles as the photography was taking place. It started without issue and provided a thunderous, smirk-inducing note from the exhaust. It's loud, thunderous and impressive. There are no reported issues with the car but the maintenance paperwork is minimal, with only a couple of invoices present informing us of any servicing work. The 3L Porsche engine is a suitable paring to the vehicle's powerful appearance and brings more modern performance and equipment such as power steering, better brakes and steering.
SUMMARY
The 250GT is an unobtainable car, a car so rare, so special that they only come for sale once in a blue moon and when they do they fetch an amount that could buy a small country, or at least a yacht the size of one. This replica is a charming tribute that will provide hours of enjoyment and will likely provoke hundreds of questions wherever you roam. It's one of a kind and a very unique opportunity, just like the real deal.
