1989 BMW Motorrad R 100GS

Highlights

  • Family-owned and cherished for the past 20 years
  • Recent fresh MOT with no advisories
  • Beautiful condition with little use since 2002
  • Reported to be in excellent running condition

The Appeal

Produced from 1987 to 1996, the BMW Motorrad R 100GS and the smaller capacity R 80GS, were successors to the highly successful R 80G/S series built throughout the early 1980s.
Following market research undertaken by BMW Motorrad it was found that the G/S series bikes were almost universally used on the road and, therefore, the new GS (Gerlände Sport) bike was developed with this primary use in mind.
The result was perhaps one of the best all-purpose bikes ever built - best suited to road use but also very capable on the rougher stuff. The excellent ground clearance, long suspension travel and upright riding position all lending themselves well to this duality of purpose.
Powered by a 980cc air-cooled boxer twin engine, the R 100GS delivers its 60bhp via a motorway-friendly 5 speed gearbox. The R 100GS can reach 60mph in a brisk 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 112mph. One particular improvement of the GS over its G/S predecessor was the introduction of the paralever swing arm in place of the earlier monolever arm system, cleverly reducing driveshaft torque reaction under acceleration.
The R100GS offered here is a beautiful example, decked out in the stunning and ever-popular ‘bumblebee’ colour scheme of yellow over black. Family owned for the past 20 years, during which time it has seen very little use, this bike is now ready to get back out on the road…or indeed the trail!

The History and Paperwork

  • V5 present
  • First registered 22/08/1989
  • 8 former keepers
  • MOT with no advisories until 04/06/2024 and lots of older MOT certificates from the 1990s
  • Current owner since 2018, prior to this owned by seller’s father-in-law from 2002
  • BMW Grimsby sales invoice from 2002 in paperwork confirming mileage at that time as 42,436 miles
  • Current mileage only 43,912 miles, demonstrating only around 1500 miles use in the past 20 years
  • Multiple receipts for various parts over the years
  • Original owner’s handbook present
  • Reported to have been serviced regularly by the seller’s father-in-law during his ownership 2002 – 2018
  • Haynes service and repair manual

The Condition

  • Fabulous and complete condition commensurate with its history
  • Great ‘bumblebee’ colour combination of yellow over black and in stunning condition with only the smallest of defects
  • Matching period BMW panniers
  • Garaged for past 20 years with very little use and only then used in fine weather conditions
  • Superb brightwork which really pops against black paintwork
The pampered life this bike must have led is clear from the very first glance. The seller reports that, throughout their period of family ownership, the bike has always been garaged and only driven on dry days, and my how it shows!
The glorious yellow-over-black paintwork is in fabulous condition and really dazzles in the sunshine. The paintwork is beautifully complimented by the exceptionally clean mechanicals and gorgeous brightwork of the spoked wheels and exhaust.
Only on the closest of inspections will the discerning buyer find the smallest of scuffs or dings. A very small ding is noted on the top of the fuel tank and a little paint has been lost over the luggage rack but, otherwise, the bike presents exceptionally well.
The bike also benefits from a lovely set of hard panniers at the rear, further complimenting the overall period look of the bike.

The Mechanics

  • Limited use of around only 1500 miles in the past 20 years
  • Purchased from BMW Grimsby by previous owner in 2002
  • Various miscellaneous invoices for replacement parts over the years
  • Recent MOT shows no advisories
  • Seller reports that during his father-in-law’s ownership the bike was fastidiously self-maintained
The seller reports that the bike is in excellent running condition and the fine appearance of the mechanicals would certainly suggest that this ought to be the case. All that remains now is for the next owner to get it back out on the road!

Summary

A really lovely example of an iconic bike presented in beautiful condition. Having had very little use in the past two decades this bike surely deserves to be put back on the road in the hands of its next owner.
