THE APPEAL
The bedroom poster car for many young petrolheads growing up in the 1980s, and it's easy to see why. The 1988 Porsche Carrera Sport Coupé is one of the most iconic shaped 911s ever produced, further enhanced by the sports package, which included the spoiler, Fuchs wheels and sunroof.
This 1988 Carrera ticks all the boxes when looking to step into classic Porsche ownership. The 3.2 litre Carrera’s came with a galvanised body, and from 1987 onwards, the much more desirable and stronger G50 five-speed gearbox; also included with the sports package was an electric pack and sports seats.
This particular car has the benefit of being given a complete respray three years ago to a high standard which is still looking very fresh today. The right colour, right year, right car, what are you waiting for?
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- V5 is present
- Registered 4th Auguast 1988
- Owners handbooks present
- Original tool kit
- Two keys
- MOT valid until 8th May 2023
- Full respray three years ago
The Porsche has been with the vendor for the past four years, and within that time, he has had the bodywork freshened up by Paint Wizards in Telford, who tackled any areas for concern during this 14 month operation. The car had the windows removed when painted, and all the seals were replaced with genuine items before being refitted.
There is an extensive history file or, should we say files, which will come with the car showing just how well it has been maintained throughout its life. The original handbooks and service books are present and also the spare key. There is an MOT on the car, which was carried out on the 9th May 2022, and it passed with no advisories. As part of the maintenance, the vendor has ensured the car has been given an oil change every 12 months regardless of mileage, with the last one being carried out in 2021, approximately 500 miles ago.
THE INTERIOR
- Original Blue leather interior
- Original Blaupunkt radio cassette
- Sports seats
- Sunroof
- Nice patina
Inside, the Carrera Sports seats are the larger bolstered sports seats which are electric and finished in blue leather. These are the original seats and for the age and mileage are in excellent condition, just showing some patina. The rear seat, albeit relatively small, doesn't look to have had much use through the 911’s years. The door cards are in good condition with no scuffs or damage to mention.
The leather steering wheel is also finished in matching blue leather. This, again like the seats, has some patina but no excessive signs of wear. Looking across the dashboard, this appears to be in good order with no splits or cracks along the top. The instruments are working as they should, with the odometer reading 168,932 miles which tallies up with the online MOT history, and covering approximately 10,000 miles in the past ten years. The switchgear has some light wear but is all reported to work as it should. Retaining the factory Blaupunkt radio cassette, this does work, but the seller says it won’t lock onto a radio station frequency.
The carpets are generally in good condition with just a tiny amount of wear along the sill, but nothing excessive. Above, the headlining is nice and tight with no sagging, and the sunroof operates as you would expect. Inside the boot, the carpet is clean, and the spare wheel, jack and tool kit are present, along with the Porsche tyre compressor.
THE EXTERIOR
- Finished in Grand Prix White
- Original Fuchs wheels (included with the sports pack)
- Rear spoiler (included with the sports pack)
- Excellent paintwork
One of the best colours to finish the Porsche in is definitely Grand Prix White, and whichever angle you look at this from, it doesn’t disappoint. Since the car has been repainted, it has only covered around 700 miles meaning it still looks very fresh, and there are no issues to point out.
The shut lines around the car are all equal, and the panels open and close as they should. The lights at the front are in good condition with no splits, and the same can be said for the rear, including the Porsche panel on the engine cover. All of the rubber trims on the bumpers are in excellent condition, including the biggest of them, the great boot spoiler. As mentioned earlier, the car has been fitted with new window seals at the time of the repaint; this is reported by the vendor to have ensured the 911 is free from any annoying leaks.
The wheels are the original and sought-after Fuchs which are in excellent condition. There is a small amount of light tarnishing to the rims, but nothing 10 minutes with some metal polish wouldn’t solve. The tyres are matching Continental and have a good amount of tread remaining.
THE MECHANICS
- 3.2 litre flat-six
- 5-speed manual G50 Gearbox
- Exceptionally well maintained
- Matching tyres
The 3.2 litre all-aluminium flat-six is undoubtedly up there with some of the best sounding engines of all time. Kicking out an impressive 231bhp, this is coupled to the later G50 five-speed gearbox.
The car starts up as it should; a tiny amount of smoke clears within seconds and is a trait of the flat-six, especially if they have been standing for a few days. There are no untoward noises coming from the engine, and the vendor reports the car to pull strongly through the gears, which have a smooth change. The brakes are also said to bring the car to a stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.
SUMMARY
If you’ve been on the lookout for a nice Porsche Carrera Sports, then this has to be on the list of potentials. There is a vast amount of paperwork showing the car has been well maintained, the bodywork has had any areas well and truly addressed over a 14-month period by a well-trusted bodyshop, and the interior is all original, showing some patina but not worn out.
Topping it off, it's a Carrera Sport Coupé, and being a 1988 model it comes with the later and much more desirable G50 gearbox. So the next question is, who will become the lucky owner of this fantastic 1988 Porsche Carrera Sport? Will it be you?
