1988 Porsche 944S Coupé

Highlights

  • MOT to November 2023
  • Genuine, solid car
  • Good history
  • Unmodified and factory spec
  • Manual transmission

The Appeal

When Porsche launched the 944, it quickly gained a reputation as an engaging and surprisingly usable daily sports car. With its longitudinal, large capacity four-pot driving the rear wheels, it’s a well balanced and fine handling sports car. But with its hatchback GT styling and 2+2 interior, it’s also surprisingly roomy and practical.
This example is presented in good overall condition and would make an excellent basis for a light restoration. Fitted with a manual transmission to accompany that hearty 2.5-litre engine, it’s a great driver’s car that can genuinely be used every day.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in June 1988
  • Current owner since March 2021
  • 130,477 miles indicated, conformed by MOT record
  • Current MOT to November 2023
  • Good service history – 17 stamps in the book, last in April 2005 at 105,680 miles
  • Numerous invoices for maintenance and servicing
  • Owner’s handbooks included
  • Buyer’s guide book
  • V5C present and correct

The Interior

  • Dark brown vinyl and fabric upholstery looks to be in good order, with no notable damage, just some minor signs of wear and use
  • Brown carpet runs through the cabin and boot area
  • Steel sunroof, which is completely removable for a ‘targa’ experience
  • Electric windows and door mirrors
  • Modern JVC CD-radio system
  • Genuine black leather Momo steering wheel
  • The switchgear and controls have some marks and signs of wear as you’d expect, but overall present well and nothing appears to be missing
  • There are a couple of cracks to the dashboard – one at centre-top above the air vents and another in the fascia to the right of the ignition barrel
  • As far as we can see, the headliner looks to be secure and undamaged, it just requires some refixing at the very edge near the rear hatch
  • The boot contains a spare wheel along with part of the toolkit and an air compressor
  • The vendor tells us that everything works as it should, with no issues they know of

The Exterior

  • Guards Red paintwork is in reasonable condition, commensurate with the car’s age and mileage
  • There is some light swirling and blemishing to all panels, and the paint is generally a little dull
  • Some lacquer is peeling on the bonnet and the fuel filler flap
  • It appears as if there is a light scuff to the off-side rear wheel arch
  • Correct 15” alloy wheels, which have been recently refurbished and are shod in tyres with good tread levels
  • It looks as if all of the trim and badging is present and correct, and is in reasonable condition for the age and mileage
  • The boot mounted rubber spoiler looks in nice condition, with no cracking or UV damage evident
  • All of the glass areas and light lenses appear to be in good order, with no cracking or chipping apparent
  • Pop-ups headlamps are functioning as they should
  • Both sills appear to show some evidence of corrosion beginning on the lips, and also have some slight dents
  • The underside of the car looks nice and solid and appears to be free of notable corrosion and damage

The Mechanics

  • 2,479cc naturally aspirated inline-four, pushing 190hp to the rear wheels when new
  • The engine bay is nice and tidy, with just a little surface corrosion to some of the engine components
  • Five speed manual transmission
  • The vendor tells us the car has recently had: new front wishbones, new track rod ends, new steering rack and a new radiator
  • Long MOT to November 2023
  • It’s reported to us that the vendor has been using the car as a daily and it “always starts”, they tell us there are no mechanical issues they are aware of

Summary

If you’re after a genuinely usable, fun sports car, it’s hard to go wrong with the 944. With robust and relatively simple mechanicals, they have a reputation for being perfect home mechanic machines.
This car looks to have been well maintained and presents in good condition considering the age and mileage. With a little cosmetic brightening, it would soon be very smart indeed. A streamlined Stuttgart stallion that we’d be proud to put on our driveway.
