The Appeal
The Porsche 928 first went on sale in 1978 and enjoyed a long run of success before the German brand pulled production on its grand tourer.
Today, the model is somewhat forgotten in the shadow of the ever popular 911, but many will remember Jeremy Clarkson’s story of driving a 928 from London to Sheffield to see his father one last time. Very few cars would be at ease crossing countries as the 928 and when they look as good as this 1988 S4 model, it’s easy to see why Clarkson loves them so much.

The Interior
- Well used interior
- White and blue leather upholstery mix
- Recently replaced air conditioning unit
Inside this Porsche 928 S4 is a great mix of white and blue leather adorning the seats combined with the dark blue carpets and black dashboard. With plenty of electronic gadgets, this car is surely a great GT including cruise control, electric seats and air conditioning. While the original Pioneer stereo system provides a great retro feel and comes with the owner’s manual.
In fact, the air conditioning unit was recently replaced as part of a slight mechanical restoration and should work excellently.
Under the surface, this car is certainly in great shape but the same can’t fully be said for the interior on the whole visually. A few cracks on the dashboard and a hole in the driver’s seat bolster are clear signs of how much use this car has had during its life. With refreshed systems underneath, there’s no reason this car won’t go on for a long time yet.
The Exterior
- Beautiful Porsche 928 shape
- A few scuff marks on the paint
- Slightly faded badges
On a whole, the model looks great from the exterior. Beautiful Porsche 928 styling including the wing and circular pop-up headlights are both throwbacks to the 1980s while the deep dark blue paint looks great on the car.
Get a bit closer though and you may notice a few marks on the car, notably around lower part of the body panels and front end from stone chips. The rear wing also presents a few spots of paint blistering.
The owner notifies us of some faded badges which we notice most on the wheels. While they also quantify the underside of the car as being in fair condition though we haven’t seen much of it from underneath.
With new tyres, they should be ready for the car’s next cross-country trip.
The Mechanics
- 316 horsepower 5-litre V8 engine
- Automatic 3-speed gearbox
- Recent restoration work done mechanically
- “Excellent driver”
Despite the odd visual imperfections, this particular 928 S4 shines mechanically having had a lot of work done to it in recent years. The current owner had many parts replaced; radiator, fuel lines and steering rack crankshaft pulley among others with all the work totalling over £16,000. The car comes with many invoices showing all the work that’s been done.
Thanks to the mechanical restoration, the 5-litre V8 sitting under the bonnet is sure to live on for a while longer. In fact, the engine bay looks in overall good condition despite the worn engine cover.
With its 3-speed automatic transmission, this car should be excellent at cruising in comfort and style, the owner calls it an excellent driver.
Summary
With blemishes inside and out, this car truly shines mechanically where it has had a lot of money spent on it. Hence, it’s ready to hit the road and be used as a car of this calibre should.
That being said, it wouldn’t take much for this 928 to look as good as it is under the surface. As such, this may be an excellent light restoration project for anyone looking to get their hands dirty.
