The Appeal
G-Series cars are something of a cult classic with gorgeous styling representing the beginning of the Turbo 911. The 911 design evolved excellently from the original to this generation with sprouting headlights, bulging bumpers and the first of the Porsche whale tail spoilers.
This 1988 model from the end of the G-Series’ 17-year reign presents itself beautifully in Guards Red and makes the most of the larger, 3.2-litre engine that headlined the Carrera line-up back in the day. With excellent maintenance history all provided by the vendor and a low number on the tachometer, this is an excellent example of a very desirable Porsche.

The Interior
- Fully original
- In excellent condition
- Iconic 1980s styling
Inside this amazingly well-preserved cabin, the vehicle’s occupants will be transported back to 1988 on the day this car left the factory. The near-immaculate leather seats complete with vibrant red piping, the tall gear knob raising elegantly from the centre console and the simplistic dashboard all scream Porsche at its prime.
Behind the iconic ‘horizontal’ steering wheel sit five perfectly sculpted dials giving all the information a driver needs whilst enjoying one of the best chassis in sports car history. And surrounded by chunky, solid buttons controlling the lights is the original Blaupunkt radio that Porsche UK fitted in 1988. In very original condition, the cabin has never been subject to a retrimming and yet the carpets look in great shape.
Under the bonnet is an equally well-maintained boot complete with the full toolkit and spare wheel including the original tyre. A new battery has been fitted.
A few tears and splits in rubber seals on the tread plate near the driver’s seat are the only marks while electric seats and an immobiliser all form part of the Sport Targa’s original trim level.
The Exterior
- Guards Red paint
- Whale tail rear wing
- Targa top roof in great shape
- Underside inspected with no faults by Porsche Exeter in 2022
- JW Elite condition report carried out in 2019
Porsche 911 styling will always be some of the best in 911 history. The protruding bumpers and perhaps over the top whale tail give it an excellent air of the 1980s all while somehow preserving its timelessness.
This car has all that and more with the gorgeous Targa top roof and amazing Fuchs ‘five leaf’ wheels painted in red to match the body.
A few stone chips adorn the car’s paintwork while some of the rubber seals present some signs of wear. In general, however, the car is in excellent condition thanks in no small part to its several owners keeping it in safe garages with great conditioning units.
Underneath the car is also seemingly in great shape despite a long life on English roads. A full inspection carried out by Porsche Exeter in 2022 concluded there were no faults, leaks or any signs of rust. The car was also steam cleaned and tidied by a local Porsche specialist in 2020.
The Mechanics
- Drives and sounds brilliantly, just as a 911 should
- Air-cooled 3.2-litre flat-six
- 5-speed Getrag manual transmission
From the driver’s seat, this 911 Carrera 3.2 is surely a blast. The air-cooled 3.2-litre engine supposedly gives off the raspy tune one would expect from a 911 from its era while the great power provided by the larger engine will certainly make tackling the British B-roads a fun experience.
The 5-speed Getrag transmission that came as standard in Targa Sport models surely adds to the raw feeling as well.
The car has obviously been well looked after over the years with parts being replaced as they get old. Plenty of invoices show what has been changed out recently.
Summary
As one can imagine with such a well-kept piece of motoring history, the vendor is upset to see this car go. Not only does it look the part, it surely also performs brilliantly. They say it’s a joy to drive both at speed and on a cruise.
Furthermore, with the Targa top removed, who wouldn’t want the wind blowing in their hair from behind the wheel of a gorgeous Guards Red 911?
