- Low mileage
The Appeal
The Mercedes-Benz W124 has a world-beating reputation for reliability, with examples of the model often seen approaching or exceeding the million mile mark. It will go anywhere, do anything, and deliver its passengers in comfort and style.
This particular example ticks all the boxes: it is in excellent condition, is fitted with a smooth-running three litre straight six engine, has a low mileage, and comes with an enviable service history.
W124s don't often come in such a well looked after state as this one. This car shows just what can be achieved when custodians take responsibility for its well-being and preserve it fastidiously for the next owner. Whoever is lucky enough to be its next guardian will be inheriting a testament to the benefits of careful ownership.
The History and Paperwork
- MoT to August 2023, with no advisories
- 17 service stamps from main dealer and independent specialists
- Second owner kept the car for twenty years
- Speedometer changed at 10,000 miles by Mercedes dealer, with paperwork
- Low annual mileage
The Interior
- Seats, carpets and headlining all in great condition
- Cruise control
- Modern stereo and CD changer
The first thing you notice when opening the door of this Mercedes is its fabulous pinstriped cream cloth seats. They shout 80s executive excess and remind us that this car, when new, was certainly a status symbol. This fabric, which is matched on the door cards, appears to be in excellent condition, with no rips, tears, or stains that we could see. Likewise, the carpets and over-mats look clean and tidy, with only light signs of wear apparent in the driver’s foot well.
The dashboard and fittings look very tidy, with all the switches and dials retaining their bold, legible script. The gauges on the dashboard are reassuringly mechanical, with our favourite being the analogue fuel economy indicator.
This luxury car is fitted with cruise control, an extravagant feature in the 1980s, and an automatic gearbox, while the sound system has been replaced with a more modern Sony unit. The sunroof appears to function as it should and the headlining looks clean and well secured. To the rear, the boot is also clean and tidy and is fitted with a CD changer.
The Exterior
- ‘Smoke Silver’ paintwork in excellent condition
- Functioning sunroof
- Tidy alloy wheels
The smoke silver paintwork on this Mercedes looks great, it finishes the car off very well. It appears to be in excellent overall condition, with no significant scratches, blemishes or bubbling that we noticed. The plastic trim appears to be equally good, not suffering from any fading or cracking. Likewise, the headlights and rear light units look clear and bright.
The alloy wheels present very well, without significant scratching or corrosion. They wear Michelin tyres, which appear to retain good tread.
Sitting proudly atop the chrome grill, the famous three pointed star logo remains fixed in place, guiding the way.
The Mechanics
- Well maintained mechanically
- Silky smooth engine
- A famously comfortable ride
The accompanying service records with this car show that it has been fastidiously maintained by its four owners. One of these individuals owned the car for 20 years and is said to have maintained it with no expense spared.
The vendor states that this car comes with 17 stamps in its original service book, from Mercedes main dealers as well as independent specialists. There are reportedly a huge number of invoices which attest to the thorough maintenance regime which this car is said to have benefited from throughout its entire life.
This car’s speedometer has been changed, for which, according to the vendor, there is accompanying documentation from a Mercedes Benz main dealer to attest to the fact that this happened in 1991 when the car had been driven 10,000 miles. Therefore, the mileage displayed on the odometer is 10,000 miles less than the genuine figure.
In all, this W124 appears to have been very well looked after by its four owners. So its new custodian will be able to bid with confidence.
Summary
Here we have a W124 which has survived nearly 35 years and remains in remarkably original condition. The paintwork is bright, the interior looks almost unused and the accompanying documentation is said to be comprehensive.
We are sure that the next owner of this luxury Mercedes will be happy to benefit from its previous owners’ detailed care and attention.
