The Appeal
It’s a fixture of classic car collections - a responsive handler, and an all-round superb piece of design. The R107 is a seriously well-regarded car. With a sturdy inline-six, pleasantly proportioned interior and that iconic profile, it’s easy to see why so many of these rolled off the production lines. Elegant, timeless and gathering popularity that's resulting increasingly high values.
This example is in utterly superb order, with a good stock of paperwork, one of its most favoured interiors and - crucially - that all-important factory hard top.
The History and Paperwork
- Only 3 owners from new
- Valid MOT until July 2023
- Very impressive paperwork file
- Very large selection of invoices
- Stamped service booklet
- Original handbooks and manuals
- 2 sets of keys
The Interior
- Blue vinyl and plaid interior
- Walnut accented dash and centre console
- Entirely original from what we can discern
- Rear seats
For many, there’s nothing better to trim an R107 than blue plaid. No, it wasn’t the only option - though if you were to ask many owners, they’d say they simply can’t imagine anything else. The soft MB Tex vinyl and plush blue plaid, accented with walnut panels was a combo that felt perfectly traditional while standing out amongst its contemporaries.
The deep blue vinyl is all in excellent order - if there’s any wear or damage, we’ve not been able to discern it, with everything from the seats, to the dash and door cards looking spick and span. The most we can recommend for the rear seats is giving them a wipe down.
The plaid fabric accents display very nicely, with no rips or tears, and the pattern is still bright and eye-catching throughout. This continues into the carpets, which show some light signs of wear but still display well without any major damage we can spot.
The dashboard and its veneer accents are clean and well-kept. They could arguably do with a valet to polish between the deep joints, but apart from that? We can’t see any damage to the accent lacquer, nor any scuffs or meaningful marks to the blue vinyl finish. The instruments are bright, clear and easy to read, and we’ve not been informed of any technical faults. Pleasingly, the original stereo is still nestled comfortably in the dashboard, too.
This theme continues to the boot, which appears to be in good order with a good spare wheel.
The Exterior
- Finished in Smoke Silver (702O)
- Original condition with matching flat-face alloys
- Hard top included
- Soft top in good order
The R107 is a popular car and, if you’re familiar, you likely know exactly what you’re looking at. For the uninitiated though, this is a very well-kept 300SL. We can’t spot any major faults to the exterior finish, with no bubbling, no corrosion - barely even a stone chip. Arguably the biggest spot of damage is a scuff to the right side of the front bumper, and standard levels of wear to the lower sills.
The windows are in good order - with the windshield having been replaced in 2007. We did notice a small piece of rubber seal missing on the right hand front window, but the glass itself appears to be in good order across the board.
The hard top is in good condition, with the chrome trim still displaying very nicely. There is a very slight bend to the front right-hand lip, but it’s still fitting in place solidly and does nothing to detract from the overall appearance of the car.
The soft top appears to be in very good condition with no rips or tears.
The soft top appears to be in very good condition with no rips or tears.
Underneath, there are a few very minor spots of surface-level corrosion - but it’s of very little consequence and nothing that raises concern to us.
The Mechanics
- 3-litre, six-cylinder engine
- Smooth automatic transmission
- Engine bay is in good condition
- No reports of mechanical faults
- No leaks, knocks, bangs or smoke reported by the vendor
- All perishables replaced and extensive remedial work taken since 2015
- The vendor informs us the bulkhead is in solid condition
- Rust treatment undertaken leading to a good, clean example
- Cruise control
Summary
The R107 is a handsome, luxurious and solidly engineered car that's only growing more popular, and we’re confident that this one is in rare order. Beautifully presented, with its original interior, this is a superb example of the essential roadster.
