The Appeal

Rover was a great marque, a defining name within the landscape of British automotive history. Its cars of the past have all graduated to classic status, and the 800 is poised to follow in the desirable footsteps of cars like the SD1, the P6 and the P5. These cars were bold, they were plush and they were handsome - everything a truly executive car should be. It’s taken the 800 a while to find its footing in the classic car world, but it has indeed found it. The value of these cars is only going one way, especially when they’re as good as this 820SE.

This is an unrestored car, one that has been cared for without concern for cost. It’s been cherished from the very beginning, and the incredible condition is evidence of that. Every panel is arrow straight, an interior that wouldn’t look lost in a showroom and mechanical components that have covered a mere 24k over the last thirty-five years. This is an astonishing find, and one that will surely be the jewel in any collector’s collection. You simply won’t find one this honest, original and immaculate.

The History and Paperwork

  • Detailed history file of MOTs and service records
  • Complete Fast Check fuel injection system equipment
  • MOT until May 2023
  • Historical notes made by past owner regarding maintenance
Bought by a newly-retired gentleman, A8FCH was to be his rarely used post nine-to-five chariot. The car is a 1987 Rover 820SE and was indeed registered on the 1st of August that year. Interestingly though, the chassis number suggests it was built in 1986, and as such, is in fact a very rare car being built in the launch year of this model.
The car was used sparingly, and lived in a dry garage when not in use, explaining the incredible ‘survivor’ condition in which it presents. By 1996, the car had covered a mere 13,000 miles according to the service history. Since then, it has risen to a hair under 25,000 miles. Barely anything at all. As such, the car is quite a remarkable find. It stayed with the first owner until 2008.
After this, it was owned in short succession by another couple of people before being snapped up in 2013 by the current owner, an avid 800 enthusiast. Knowing this was not an opportunity likely to be repeated, he has coveted the car ever since, using it only for shows, and only in the best weather.
The car comes with a whole host of paperwork. There are past MOTs that show nothing more concerning than some repairs to binding calipers, a need for new tyres and some other sundry items. There are clippings from magazine features, as well as photographs from earlier days. There are also print outs of service records, as the original service book was sadly lost. Finally, the car also comes with the rare Fast Check diagnosis and tuning equipment for the single-point fuel injection system. A godsend, and one that has brought the emissions back into spec in the past.

The Interior

  • Near factory condition throughout
  • Fully functional electrics
  • Original factory stereo still present
  • Zero evidence of wear and tear
You get classic cars that inevitably use the word ‘time-warp’ to describe things, and it can be a bit heavy-handed. Make no mistake though, that’s not the case here. Sit in this 1987 Rover 820SE and with the exception of the phone in your pocket, there is nothing to suggest it’s not in fact 1987. It is in incredible condition.
The light grey seats look factory fresh. No marks, no wear, no neglect. The same can be said of the carpets both front and back. Even the chrome 'Rover' plates on the sills are all near perfect. Look into the pillars and you’ll see clean, gleaming paint. No dirt, no corrosion, just a glossy shine. The rubbers are all excellent (though there is some slight shrinkage on the inner door seals, but nothing of any consequence), the door cards are all in good condition and even all the fitted electrics work - if you know Rovers, you know what a big deal that is.
The dash is in excellent condition which, again, is rare for an 800. Prone to swelling and lifting, this car has suffered no such fate. The fit is tight and everything is as it should be. The binnacle plays host to the rare, early six-dial arrangement, while the centre console holds the original factory radio. And again, everything functions as it should. It is an exceptional interior, and one that will leave you stunned the first time you immerse yourself in it. Cared for, preserved and resplendent as a result.

The Exterior

  • All original bodywork
  • Exceptional panel fitment and uniform gaps
  • Outstanding condition paintwork
  • Recently replaced tyres
  • Stored under a cover indoors
Given the low mileage, it’s a given that we’re going to report nothing but good things here, too. The paint is all original, and gleams on every panel. Unlike some other cars of this era, there has been no degrading of the lacquer, thanks no doubt to the car being kept inside for most of its life. The panel gaps across the car are uniform, and there are no dents to be seen.
Of course, being the exterior, this aspect of the car has had some exposure. There is a small touched-in scuff on the very lower lip of the nearside front bumper. Looking under the car, there is some very light surface rust on some of the pressed metal lips at the ends of the sills, but it is minor.
The car wears all four of the original factory hub caps, and not one has made contact with anything more solid than a breeze. The glass is all excellent, with no delamination to be observed, and it’s all the correct matching brown tint glass.
This is a show car, make no mistake. If this car had been restored, it would be impressive. The fact that its condition is original, and the result of a life lived carefully, well, that makes it truly incredible. So, so many early 800s have gone from our roads, yet as they did, this one was hiding away, preserved in a condition more befitting a car a few years old, not a few decades.

The Mechanics

  • Mechanically excellent
  • Just 24,581 miles from new
  • Regularly serviced despite minimal use
  • MOT until May 2023
Again, the mileage here sets the scene for the mechanical condition. Open the bonnet (complete with rare, early model only engine light) and you’re greeted by a twin-cam M Series 2.0 engine. No leaks, no weeps, just a clean and tidy engine bay. Again, it’s show quality really. There is no dirt to be seen, nothing has been cobbled together, it’s all original and it looks excellent.
Turn the key and it fires into life with a pleasing eagerness. The owner keeps the car running, letting it get up to temperature and so on, even if it doesn’t actually go out for a long drive all that often. The car is also regularly serviced. A cam belt and water pump have been fitted in the past, and while close to needing replacement in terms of age, they’re nowhere near in terms of mileage.
Historically, service items have been changed, brakes have been refreshed, new tyres and a new exhaust centre section at one point. That’s about all though. The car has been cared for. As such, it’s on the button and drives remarkably well. The steering is still tight and direct, the suspension is every bit as supple as you would hope a large executive car to be, the brakes bring the car to a stop with ease while the transmission is still sharp and direct, with no wear to be felt within the linkage. You could be buying this car in 1989 as a two year-old motor. It’s that good.

Summary

Rovers of this era are coming of age now, they’re finding their deserving place within the market and as such, collectors are looking for the best examples of those that have survived. This is it, make no mistake. This simply has to be one of, if not the finest, early Rover 820SE in existence. There simply can’t be another this honest and this well preserved. If you want a car that represents just how well Rover could do things, this is the one. An incredible find, and one that the winning bidder won’t be in a rush to get rid of. Miss this and truly, you’ll miss out.
