1987 Jaguar XJ-SC 3.6 Targa Top – Manual

** Private plate included in sale **

Highlights

  • Lovely history folder
  • Good exterior condition
  • Fitted with a manual gearbox

The Appeal

After years of being overlooked the Jaguar XJ is finally starting to get its moment in the sun. With this example being the Targa version, it combines all the best elements of the fixed head and drop head versions of the XJ. This makes for one excellent all-rounder.
The current owner spent an extensive period looking for one of these cars. After a long search, they decided that this was the best for them, as such you can imagine that it is presented in rather nice condition.

The History and Paperwork

  • Manufactured in the first half of 1987
  • Spent much of its early life down on the south coast
  • Within the service book, there is quite a good stamped history
  • First service in 1987 at a little over 1,000 miles, most recent service in 2020 at 70,975 miles
  • Along with the service book, there are a lot of Jaguar original books and even a map of Europe
  • V5 present and almost all of the car's MOT certificates, and invoices
  • The most recent invoice shows work done to the power steering, some repair work to the lower front valance, re-covering of the interior ‘ski slope’, and a few other smaller works
  • The current owner also did some rust repair works to the lower part of the rear bumper, as such these are now nice and solid
  • Four new tyres in 2020
  • In 2018 the rear subframe assembly was removed to replace the rear brakes and a couple of new radius arms
  • It looks like the water pump was replaced in 2017 at 68,800 miles

The Interior

  • Wonderfully original condition
  • The centre console, or ski slope, has been recovered in a smart black vinyl
  • Great wood veneer condition
  • Fitted with a lovely light brown leather interior
  • For the age of the car, the leather is in very good condition
  • The two rear seats are in the best condition
  • The two front seats showing signs of use, but no major damage
  • If you want to get picky, there is some slight rubbing to the passenger side bolster
  • The light brown carpets throughout are presented very well indeed
  • The removable roof section shows some marks on the headliner on the rollover hoop section and just above the driver’s door
  • The two removable Targa-tops are in great condition on the inside
  • With a simple twist of a handle, they are removed and stowed neatly in the original bag found in the boot
  • The rear section then folds down and stores neatly behind the rear seats
  • Up front, the centre console and dash area look very nice
  • The black vinyl is in good condition
  • Even the Quartz analogue clock set into the dash showed the correct time throughout the photoshoot
  • There is some slight damage to a couple of the buttons on either side of the clock, but these don’t appear to affect their usage
  • In the boot, you’ll find the same light brown carpet, the Targa-top bag, and the spare wheel
  • Overall, the interior is in lovely condition

The Exterior

  • Presented in a fetching Silver Birch colour
  • This paint is in good condition in general
  • As mentioned, two rear quarter panels, just behind the rear wheels, have been replaced with new metal and re-sprayed
  • Front valance also repaired due to corrosion
  • A couple of areas on the boot lid show signs of bubbling and there are a few areas of very minor corrosion dotted around the exterior
  • There is also one minor car park ding to the driver’s side, along with some slight loss of the gold pinstripe
  • Overall, the major body panels look nice and solid
  • All four of the rims are in very good condition
  • Overall, the exterior is presented very well for its age

The Mechanics

  • This XJ-SC runs and drives very well indeed
  • On the day of the photoshoot, it started first time and drove to the location
  • During the drive it behaved impeccably, riding well, and delivering power to the rear wheels with no apparent juddering or hesitation
  • Fitted with a 3.6l six-cylinder it is more than capable out on the road
  • It also has a 5-speed manual gearbox
  • There is a wealth of service history and some invoices for mechanical work
  • The current owner spent a lot of time and care in picking the correct example
  • After listening to some of their experiences with other XJ-SCs, the vendor tells us that this is a very good driver

Summary

It’s clear to see that this car is a very good example of a rare Jaguar. Thanks to the care of the current and previous owners you will be getting a very nice car indeed.
Importantly though, this should be treated as a proper driver’s car. Thanks to the manual gearbox and torquey six-cylinder it provides a memorable drive. With the targa roof removed, there are few other experiences like it.
